Well, I don't know if this is the fault of the hard drive or maybe it is the fault of the OS' i'm trying to install...

I got this old maxtor 10 gig HD, set as master, and I wanted to throw it into a 1.2 AMD/ABIT box with a 64mb siluro mx card. Problem is, when I try to format in NTFS or FAT32, it freezes at 80%, so I believe it is a HD problem, well anyway, I said, why not try and install the OS anyway? I did so, but when it comes to boot time, it just hangs after verfying the DMI pool data. Is this the fault of the HD? and is it showing signs of pre-death??

Try physically removing any cards (except video) in the machine and see if it still gives you a problem.

The drive probably has some bad sectors. Use a win98 bootdisk, and Fdisk it to remove all partitions, recreat the primary partitionn, and try formatting again (using the 98 bootdisk) If it stops at say 80% take note of where it stops. Then Fdisk again, and only use 75% of the drive for your partition.

At least you will be able to use the drive for a while. There is no way of telling how long it will last, but I have a 4Gig drive (using 70 percent or so for over a year and a half. It had bad sectors too, and that was my way around it.
