I just got back from my morning classes, and I walk into the dining room, put my backpack down, and just as im about to turn around, My eyes catch a spider on a freshly made web...like 2 inches away from my back door and my backpack! Upon closer inspection, Its a Freaking Black widow!! and its at a perfect height to catch on your legs if your wearing shorts...like i have been for a few days

That freaks me out....ive been going in and out of that door like 50 times a day...and ive caught on a web a few times too (thinking its just a daddylong legs or something). Im going to the store to buy some bug bombs...

WoW. i did'nt know there were Black Widow spiders in LA. I thought those where found in the jungle, not the city.

My car was an Incubator for those things while it was broke down... but "gads" in my house! Im gonna check if there are any more arounf that area....

Heck no...I went out into my outdoor closet cubbyhole to move some boxes last week and was met by two of those suckers!

I don't know about that (I don't think they're tropical).

Widow spiders prefer to nest near the ground, in dark, undisturbed areas. Nest sites often are near holes produced by small animals, or around construction openings and wood piles. Low shrubs also are common sites for widows to occur. Indoors, widows similarly occur in dark, undisturbed sites such as behind furniture or under desks. Undisturbed basement areas and crawl spaces of homes are also used by nesting widow spiders.

Yeah i got my flash light and looked, I knew (with my luck) that it couldn't be a common house spider....

It really makes me feel safe...watching all those shows about people being bit by those things, sometimes in their own beds. ("He was screaming in agony as he got into the car to go to the hospital")....

A few years ago, I whent to change the mop head on my mop and as I grabbed the new one, was met to a HUGE widow what was less than and inch from my hand...THAT was scarey shiznit!

Every once in a while, I blast out all dark corners of my apartment with some serious insecticide just out of paranoia; I've been awakened by mysterious "itchings" that freaked me out before and so I try a little preventative maintenance.

Try working in environments that are packed with spiders...I don't so much hate spiders as I do the feeling of spider web on my face/head...I've got web stuff on the back of my carharts jacket from when I went under a crawlspace a little while ago...

I normally carry a stick with me under a crawlspace so I can clear a path thru spider webs in crawlspaces that have an overabundant supply of webs...

lol, yeah, if I had one I woulda done the same...matter of fact, I was at a home a couple of weeks ago with a guy who was in training...I had been to this house before and knew what kind of mess the crawlspace was...this crawlspace had a repeated problem of flooding and getting into the cabling underneath...so I sent him down in it to fix the problem...

I like spiders. We have many varieties outside my house (Including Widows). Advantage? Little to no mosquitoes, which is quite the boast for a NJ native.

Their webs are a bit annoying with the boat.

UGH! Spiders.....I hate them too!

I read an article about the bad things that happen to most everyone during their lifetime (i.e. - the death/funeral of their parents, etc., etc.). Included in the list was a section on things you don't even know that happen to you. The gruesome capper to this was...."The average person eats at least 3 spiders during their lifetime." Now I don't know how they figured that out but I guess it happens while your sleeping. If it's true, I'm gonna hire a bodyguard to sit and watch me sleep (and shoo away the spiders.)

The shop foreman, where I get my auto repairs done, got nailed by a 'brown recluse' while he was sleeping last month. Got him and his fiance both. They both did several days in the hospital and cost them a couple of thousand apiece for antibiotics to kill that 'creepin' crud' that eats your skin away. Why couldn't NOAH have squashed them two spiders (and swatted them two mosquitos).

Omg...ouch, I watched a show on those spiders, just seeing them gives me the shivers.... My moms friend in NewMexico got bit by one of those. Is the skin damage permanent though?

Antibiotics would not work on the venom of a Brown Recluse spider. Many people have severe reactions to their bite. The necrosis does cause permanent scarring. There have been deaths reported from incidents with this little spider. They are more dangerous than the typical tarantula.

brown recluses use a venom on their prey that "liquifies" their prey so they can make an easy meal of them. it will spread all over unless treated. my mom had a friend who had to have a big chunk of his leg removed because it was spreading...

however Im not so much scared by all spiders...but I do NOT want to get bit by one or even NEAR one poisonous like that.

and you do eat 3 spiders in your lifetime and they all are in your sleep....it was under my snapple cap the other week

To help avoid brown recluse bites, always shake out clothes ytou haven't worn in a while, check shoes before putting them on and pull back your sheets before jumping into bed. I do it out of habit now.

The recluse can't survive the winters here..unless somehow they get transported to an indoor area on freight or something.

Hobo's on the other hand..do well in the Pacific Northwest and are quite numorous. As are Black Widows. I'd rather be bit by the latter as the Hobo's bite is a bit like the Recluse....some say worse.

I kill dozens in my house in the winter..My wife hates them..I only worry about one getting into my clothing but they like the ceiling and the tops of the walls.

I teach the kids to grab the offending spider and cup it in their hand and set it in the bushes outside.

The only spiders we need to worry about here in Cali are Brown recluse and Black Widows.. so identifing those are immediate..

Like DeM said, the spiders out in the back yard keep nasty, dirty flying insects from invading our space... I thinks it's a fair exchange

phew... thank god no poisonous spiders here in the Netherlands.... still hate them though....

the cat likes them though... great fun to play with and to eat (yuck)
