I'm in the market for a decent DVD writer to burn my MiniDV camcoder movies to DVD to watch on the tube. Anyone have recommendations or pros & cons of differeent models/makes and/or formats ?

I'm new to this end of the computer/visual area and any help or opinions and feedback would be appreciated !!!!!

There are several good ones out there. Check to see if your particular DVD player is supported by the format the burner uses (DVD+RW vs. DVD-RW). On most modern DVD players either should be fine.

and you should be fine.

My bro in law got that burner open box at best buy for $269 after instant rebate. It's pretty nice and Sony will be offering a firmware upgrade to 4x burning when it becomes available.

[adds to theoretical future homebuilt system]

Are there any downsides to those as your system's only burner? I noticed the CD-R burn speeds are much slower then those on normal non-DVD burners.

I have had the A03 for over a year now. I can say that the -r or +r formats are rather immaterial as long as blanks are plentiful.

I like the Sony over the Pioneer, since it does not require "official" (Read: pre-encoded to prevent unlicenced blank from being used) 4x blanks.

The Sony and Pioneer will write 4x data as of now, however video will only be scribed at 2x.

I want to get a DVD burner too in Jan/2003!

My knowledge is not that good, but all my DVD-Video are >5GB
And the DVD-/+R are 4.7GB !??!?!??!?
I have read some articles that I have to "rip" some unused stuff sothat it fits in 4.7GB...

Will I have "dts" or "5.1" sound with the "ripped" Video DVD ?!?!
Because my MARANTZ and B&W want them :)
