Do I need to format?

Hello, thanks for your help. Im having a big problem here and I don't know if I need to buy a new hard drive or just reformat, but when it boots , scan disk starts. There is no yellow progress bar and it says disk C may have bad sectors. I can access the internet but it takes like 10 minutes for a page to open. Also it says scan disk encounter a data error while reading the FAT on drive C. This error prevents scan disk from fixing this drive. Please help, do I need to take this to the shop, or how can I fix this?

I think that a format should fix this.

I don't know how to reformat, I do have a windows 98 disc, how do I start the reformat process. I don't need to save anything, so that is not necessary. Thanks for your help.

I would suggest trying a thorough disk scan and set it to auto-fix errors, it may take a while but also may solve the problem. If you have actual physical errors on the drive it may be toast and you will have to replace it. If you run a thorough scan disk and it doesn't work then reformat and if that doesn't work then replace the drive.

If Scandisk is reporting bad sectors.....WARNING WOOT WOOT...You have a better than greater chance your hard drive is failing. While a reformat will solve the problem short term, bad sectors and clusters will only continue to multiply,I would back up any important information or data you have and start saving for a new Hard drive. It may last 1 more day or 6 months, but eventually you will turn it on to boot up and you will get the" Non-system Disk or Disk error"

then you will have a handy paperweight.
ASAP,if you scandisk and keep finding bad sector's,i would invest in a new HDD.
