Grandson called and is having problems getting hooked up atShippensburg U. He was told he needed an ethernet card. now does that work. If he installs the card how do you hook to the college network and the world wide web?

ethernet is the most common interface to a network. He probably has an ehternet jack in his room. Once he installes the card he can connect his computer to that jack using ethernet cable. Viola! Network access. He will then use the school's connection to the internet to get on the web.
3com and intel are the best card manufacturers out there.
Cheers,
Skye

is this a laptop computer or a desktop?
You know, many stores that sell these devices will install them for you. Bestbuy, compusa, microcenter, etc. It will involve taking the cover off and installing a board. You might have some documentation that came with your pc as to how to upgrade components

Every fall semester here in central florida I get a ton of business from the dorm rooms with new students needing NIC's installed and access to the UCF Pegasus Network. Once you get the NIC installed your grandson should have received a sheet of paper with the instructions on how to login to the college network for the first time. Every college is a little different I'm sure, but sometimes you have to do a few special steps the very first time you connect to the network. It's not always a plug & play operation so be sure he has his log-in instructions, then he should be fine.
Thanks

No offense, guys, but flyfisher -- shouldn't your kid be talking with the network/IT support people at the university? I'm sure this is something they can help him with in about 10 minutes.
I thought colleges sent out computer requirements to new students before the school year...didn't your kid get anything like that?

Check the original post - the school told him he needed a NIC. He was looking for validation/advice on purchasing one. Once he has it I am sure the school will provide configuration assistance to get on the network. If I were a school I certainly wouldn't want to support hw installation on every computer that students choose to purchase - that would be a nightmare!

to answer your question about living in florida:
I grew up in West Palm Beach and to be honest with you, people should never generalize about Florida (unless you're talkin' about the weather) because South Florida, Central Florida, West Coast, North Florida, & Panhandle each have their own vibe.
South Florida: very crowded, very fast paced, very diverse mix of people, excellent night life, lots of very expensive shops, good looking women everywhere!, lots of trouble to get into and more arrogant vibe from the locals.
Central Florida: growing fast, feels safer, people drive very slow, horrible traffic jams, miserable night life, lost tourists everywhere, easy to drive to other regions of florida, and lots of computer work and jobs.
West Florida: lots of retired people, beachy feel, Bucs games, in-laws, better night life than central florida but not as good as south florida. I'd love to live there but not until I'm much older.
I don't see the rest of the state much, but let me guess,... its hot.. rainy summers,.. humid... and oh yeah.. HOT!

I understand, cyberskye. I was just suggesting that his grandson needs to be a little more proactive, and get support a little closer to the problem. Well, at least closer than a grandfather posting on a message board.
Heck...flyfisher -- I live in the Harrisburg area. If you want (or if HE wants), I can talk with the kid. Or he can take his laptop to Circuit City and they can fix him up very quickly.
Great Info Thanks

Where what would you recommend for a winter home for a Pirate fan trout flysherman from Central Pa, who likes to see beautiful women. Computer question, I am fooling with a older Gateway Destination computer, I was having trouble with accessing the TV and the DVD, I "removed" the "impact media processor" under "system" Device Manager, now when I boot it gets past the Windows 98 page to the green screen, the the "found media processor" loading software appears and thats it it freezes and either goes blank or if I hit a screen I get that wonderful "blue screen" The disk drive sounds sort of like a coffee grinder at times??

The kid got the comp the day before he left for Shippensburg, so we didn't get to look at it and we are both not familiar with laptops, good suggestion about Circuit City Thanks
