I have a Windows 2000 Server Box set up with NAT and RAS sitting in my basement. It is an AMD Athlon 900, 392 MB Ram, with 2 ethernet cards. I have a Cable Modem through AT&T, 1.5MB/128. I have my server connected to my cable modem with a Farallon PN796 10/100 USB adapter I got from work (I am a cable modem technician). I have a 3Com EtherLink XL (3c905-TX) connected to my internal network.

My question is, is it possible to set the TCP RWIN values independently for each adapter. I obviously want my internal network to run faster than my internet connection.

Welcome to Speedguide.

I don't know about changing your settings for the adapters, but by default your internal network will run alot faster then your internet connection (i.e, cable modem top speed through that USB/NIC is 10MB/sec and your internal network NIC will be 100MB/sec unless u have 10MB/sec cards or hub/switch)

Furthermore, if want your internal network to be faster and secure, use netbeui, it's faster then TCP/IP and is non routable.

Also if you are using 10MB/sec cards or hub/switch.....upgrade them you will notice a considerable increase of speed to your internal network, doesn't matter much for the nic connected to the modem.

I understand where you are coming from, my internal network is running at 100mbps, I am running my DC in Native Mode and all my workstations are running XP so NetBEUI is not an option. I appreciate the thought.

I do change MTU settings and such for some of my customers to help their connections, but was wanting to play with the packet size on my internal network to see if I could speed it up without slowing down my Internet Connection. Since they both run through the same box.

Netbeui is always an option, it's just alittle harder to find on XP;

Put XP into the cd-rom, bring up Win explorer, then go to valueadd>MSFT>NET>NetBeui

Installation instructions for NetBEUI protocol on Windows XP and Windows 2002.

* copy nbf.sys into the %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ directory
* copy netnbf.inf into the %SYSTEMROOT%\INF\ directory
* open network connection properties and use "Install..." button to add NetBEUI protocol

and then it's installed, u don't even have to re-start your computers.
