Hi.

I have been visiting your site often and it has
been very helpful.
I`ve recently moved from a dial-up(which I had tweaked) to a
broadbandconnection. -(About which I don't know anything)
The stuff on your site is very inetresting and I`ve learned
a lot too.
A big thank you for it.

I take it that the Registry tweak works only with IE.
If so, is there any way I can apply this registry tweak in another browser ?
I use Netscape or Mozilla. -At present am using Mozilla 1.0.

what relevance has the line for me, Quote:

I don`t have a modem but my card is, built-in.

Am using:-
Win98

The adapter in Device Manager is ,
VIA PCI 10/100Mb Fast ethernet adapter.

It is on IRQ - O5 which is shared by
the Graphics Adapter & ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering. -Totally
Will this affect performance ? are there any alternatives ?
Do you have any suggestions ?

Also should a LAN Port be listed in device manager like the COM ports.

To tell you the truth a lot of people on this site are wishing that tweak worked. You can't assign memory to IRQ's using the system.ini file. Memory assignment is done by the kernel or the drivers.

So you don't have to worry about anything.

But if they convince you otherwise and you decide to use the useless tweak you can disable ACPI. That will seperate your IRQ's.

If you put that line into your system.ini file windows will simply ignore it. It doesn't do any harm.

You don't want to share an IRQ with your vid card if at all possible.

Disable any devices (or ports) you're not using in BIOS (Like USB, COM or LPT) to free up some IRQ's then reboot, go to device manager and remove the devices sharing IRQ 05 (if they are still sharing) then reboot. Hopefully each device will find it's own IRQ.
If not you can try 'manually setting IRQ's for the problem devices.

My thoughts as well, but will NOT argue with other members who feel it works.

If you have AGP video, do NOT use the PCI slot directly beneath the AGP slot. This PCI slot shares the same IRQ as the AGP slot.

I'm not going to argue with anybody.

I'm just stating a fact. If somebody decides to argue I won't be around to bother responding.

If you will assign IRQs in the bios, Win2k and XP will respect that, and not share. None of the 5 PCs here have ACPI disabled, all are set as PnP OS in the bios, all are dual cpu units and none share IRQs in Win2k or XP (except those in shared PCI slots and those are assigned different IRQs by the OS)
ACPI is your friend.

As to sys.ini tweaks in NT - placebos come in all flavors.
Just like some of the so-called tweaks for NT that haven't been looked at/acknowledged by the OS since Win2k SP2
But they still make XP oh so much faster.

Sorry, but I just hate ACPI.

I usually shoot to kill when I see ACPI. At least in win2k/xp I've had major stability issues with my videocard sharing IRQ's with other devices.

I try chaning them in the bios, but unlike your results win2k/xp don't follow those on my system(s).

Hi I have a graphics card on my AGP port.
-But I'm not fully clear, if you mean slot for my ethernet card.
-if so then , my card is built-in my chipset..
If you mean ; where the cable is plugged ?
-then, it is the 'LAN Port' which is at the side of 2 USB ports.

[using a motherboard with a VIA P4M266 chipset.] OS:Win98

please tell me what are the defaults on IRQ's I used to know now I have forgotten. I thought IRQ 5 was for vid and IRQ 7 was for sound. I just pulled up my system IRQ assignments and I have this:

IRQ # Device

This would leave IRQ 2 (Which I am sure is reserved for something but I forget what), 5, 7, 10, 11, and 12 all open. That doesn't sound right but I am not positive. Please give me a listing of what they should be and if at all possible please tell me what to do to reassign my vid and sound etc. to make performance better on my WIN 2K machine.

I too would like to know that and was thinking about it.-what the defaults are ?
-And more so what is the usual recommended IRQ for the LAN Card.
(mine is built-in the Chipset)

I believe it has more to do with what the motherboard sets it to, and which pci slot it's in.

Each motherboard varies which pci slots have which irq.

Only guess, but I'm sure it's more accurate than defaults for types of cards.

regardless of what this says, that still doesn't mean that it is impossible. It is still possible to disable the ACPI features in a BIOS as long as it is done prior to install and that the OS doesn't have access to reenable it.
