was it legal to open their coffins the day after they died?
is it legal to open their coffins 4,600 years?

do these archeologist run up the country and escape with the loot? :D

these archeologist think they have the right to unearth whatever the hell they want , such as in Peru , those mummies underground are there for a purpose, , but if the descendants where litterate of THEIR cultural history and people hell would freeze over before they got their hands on it.But no respect for the still alive Indegenous people.

i know this stuff is of great value but it seems pretty illegal to dig up your grave TODAY but what will stop them thousands of years later? what else are we going to learn by disturbing the dead how despotic they where or what chemical they used to preserve the dead.

i dispise the idea of digging up such graves

what do you think???

My sister is on a dig in Belize until the 29th.

As for WHY they do these type of digs is to learn about the history of the reagon...most if not all digs are sstate sponsored IE. Egypt Mueums participate and organize digs in co-operation with American and Euro colleges/museums.

Grave robbing should be legal, they don't need all the valuables they're buried with.

Well i know its to learn but its wrong,
i guess we have to live with the fact that if the government wants your body theyll get it regardless, i have to much respect for the dead to go up digging graves, you know the hershey guy who in his will left a percantage of $ made from selling the chocolate, im latino, but in his will he clearly stated he wanted only white boys with the certain grades to be allowed in the school , thats another example of how DISRESPECTFUL society is.
they broke that will and now its kids of both sexes and all races.

The problem being that ancient civilisations didn't always keep a written record of their society etc so most of the information found in books was written by or obtained from archeological sources.

I think it's our duty to learn and document history. Remember those huge 2000 year old statues that the Taliban/Al Qaida destroyed? Now they are gone for good and it would only be a matter of time before someone did the same to the Egyptian tombs.

Plus, there is always a chance, regardless of how small, that opening those tombs could lead to something more important.

Magg i dont mind going through the tombs to learn but its the grand disrespect we have with the dead. I think this is based on what people would accept after their deaths, id hate it if people were going through my coffin but then again some people wouldnt mind but im pretty sure a noble doesnt allow his grave to be dug

I understand what you're saying but unfortunately the dead don't get a say..

I don't think we have a disrespect though, if we did we'd probably throw the corpses in the trash or something. This way, they have thousands of people coming to museums each year to see them. Whether or not they would have wanted that, we'll never know.

well magg we may not know what they wrote on their will but theres a reason why it took 4,600 years to find his tomb :D

It's not robbing.. some parts of the world they're trying to save the mummies because people knows that there is money in the mummies and they rob the mummies. They're trying to protect the mummies by finding them first so no one destroys it.

you know htose pharoas tombs... if they did not fidn it.. I don't think there will be anything left ... we won't know so much about egypt.

no matter how you put it its tomb robbing, archeologist are just the lesser of 2 evils.

i do feel that it is disturbing the dead and is wrong, however i do want to be the first person to walk through the doors of the tomb of the first emperor of china.

its a cultural thing...

I didn't say we don't know any history about egypt. God, we can read the carvings from the wall. I'm saying, if we don't get to it first and preserve it then it will be all gone and there will be many more history gone.

Btw. Why are you taking it so personally?

It's a complicated issue for sure, many different sides and views to it.

On one side we have the learning and discoveryin into our past, and on the other we have the moral implications of digging up someome's grave.

I'm no archeologist, but I don't think they just go in there trashing the place and desecrating the graves. I do believe they are INCREADIBLEY carefull to preserve the sites and not mess anything up. They are carefull to keep everything intact. Grave robbers on the other hand are the ones that destroy such things.

I think by the archealogists discovering the tomb they can now protect it from grave robbers, I am sure no body wants the stuff destroyed.

How do you think those history books get written? It's by people exploring and discovering new things. Without the exploration we will stop learning about our past. And it's very important to know our past and where we came from and all.

I think they should continue exploring the tomb's. What maybe they should do is just open the tomb, examine it, but don't move the body. Leave the body there, after they are done examining it put the cover stone back on and leave the tomb alone.
