getting tired of "Macs are so great"

First off, I'm not a Mac user, but I'm also not a Mac hater. Or Apple. Whatever. I'm just getting sick of people (mostly my dad, actually) who don't know what the hell they are talking about, and manage to make a "Macs are so great" comment any time the subject of computers comes up.
For instance, I made a comment about formatting my hard drive. My dad replied "mac users don't have to worry about that"
Then he proceeded to marvel at how far prices had dropped, as he was able to but a 60 gig hard drive "for under $250!"
My relationship with my dad is kinda strained, so I always let these things go, and try to move the conversation to a better place.
It's getting in my nerves though. Is it just me, or are a lot of Apple-users that way? Meaning clueless and inept with their computers, yet more than willing to go on and on about how their iMac is the best thing EVER and how PCs don't work and Microsoft is the devil and wow I get virus infected email every day, but the mac OS is so secure and advanced that the virus writers really aren't able to find any weaknesses to exploit, but wow windows is just riddled with security holes you really have to watch it if you are going to use one of those anyway and explain to me again why you bought a pc?
Sheesh. The closes thing I ever hear to a valid point is something along the lines of "Macs are prefered by graphic artists" - coming from somebody who is not an never will be a graphic artist, nor do they even somewhat posses any graphic design ability...
ok, I'll stop ranting, just that a few comments got on my nerves last night.

hehe...it's good to vent sometimes.
all I can say is this...MAC's are the standard for music creation because of one thing....bus speed. that is why they are loved by the entertainment industry.

2 diff. systems both are good for waht they do.
Mac = easier for stoopid ppl to use, also good for design work.
PC = good for everything else.

edit: my bro has a mac because he is a design major and he will argue with me over this topic every time, but guess who fixes it for him when he screws it up.

In my Graphic Arts class we use Macs, however, I still prefer the PC. If I have to use a Mac to get in the Graphic Arts/Design field, so be it, I don't have a problem. However, I will always have a PC and will never totally convert to a Mac user.

no, no, no. that's a
valid point. against the rules. you're supposed to say [stern voice]well, they aren't the same you know, so even though this is rated at 500 mhz, it's really twice as fast as one of those Pen-shee-ums that are rated at 1,000[/stern voice]
Next, you should ask for advice on how to resize an image to put on your website, but stipulate that you only want to use some Mac-only shareware program that you downloaded in 1993. And then argue with any advice given.
please play by the rules

Stu - overheard comment. "yeah, I got an iMac" "Great, those are perfect for people who don't want to learn how to use a computer"
master7 -add some model airplane magazines and you're at my dad's house.
AAF Striker - yeah, if Macs are good for something, by all means use them. Or don't. It's just that the constant "macs are SO much better" attitude is often backed up by citing how great macs are for graphics/design work. By people who don't do that work and never will. Which I think invalidates the point!
good luck with the classes!

one of my neighbors from a few years back was a graphic artist and she had to use a PC @ work but she had a mac @ home, said the mac was better for graphic work.

My cousin fought me for over two years on getting a PC, she she bought her Mac and it crapped out, she ended up stuck with a 2K paper weight as NO ONE in town had the parts to fix it...mainly because in order to sell them in a shop, you need some certification from Apple...sucks @$$ if ya ask me...

I have never even touched a MAC or even really seen one up close, so I can't comment on them but I did see thier commercial yesterday on thier new system.
It had a flat screen attached to a roung (bowling ball) case. Thought it was better than thier last multi color all in one systems

good point, even though i'm a hybrid user, i still get people saying to me, "Haha, you own a pc!" LoL, my main comp is a pc, and some of the comps are macs at my dads shop..
anyways, the thing about formatting is NOT true.. I bet half the guys that use macs just surf the net.. Macs dont need as much formatting as PC's but, they sure have a HUGE share of problems..
Also, im definitly sure that you can use regular pc HDD's on macs.. so im not sure on the 60gb for 250 thing..
Although, macs have their uses..
We had a 200 meg photoshop poster that we were trying to resize and save.. it took like 30 minutes for the pc (2x p3 1ghz, radeon 32meg DDR) to finish doing it, and the mac ( g3 500 w/ 128mg) it took about 5 minutes at the most..
Yes, apple's whole "You touch anything inside, your warranty is void" thing is pretty bad, and you can't build your own, so there's no satifying experience from building your own comp..
Hey grundy, did my thread last night make ya PO'ed? if so, sorry..
Imacs, espacially the original ones were frauds/failures.. They were EXTREMELY bad.. And people talk about how good quality macs are.. (the people that say that are the ones who KNOW that imacs were crap)..
anyways..
yeah, gtg eat lunch!

Hi Vegeto
Hey grundy, did my thread last night make ya PO'ed? if so, sorry..
no, not at all. it's quite obvious that you do know what you are talking about. actually, it's mostly my dad that annoys me - I swear, every time I see him he makes some comment about how much better macs are than anything else, and usually he is not very well informed, so usually whatever he says is not only rude but wrong as well. plus, it seems like a lot of other mac users are just like that.
on the other hand, I'm sure that if I was an apple fan, I'd be annoyed by great numbers of pc users telling me how much better their computers are than mine...

I must say, the mac lab workers and techs at my university are much cooler than the PC lab people. The mac user has a much more laid back aura about them in a professional setting from my experience. A PC person in my experience will hold a Nazi like grip over your freedom of usage on the machine. Keeping a Windows machine stable takes the rule of an iron fist in an IT environment.

mac is good for ...certain applications I admit, but Mac in general compared to PC..well PC is the way I went back in the late 80's with a 386 computer and I haven't looked back since. (The only Mac'ish computer I've owned is the Golden Apple 2 and that was way back in the 80's..) As for being a Computer Nazi..heheh I don't know, I wouldn't want you messing up my computers in lab if I were an IT person, but if you were a friend, I'd let you screw around a little.

I own a PC and have never touched a Mac until Graphics Class this semester. My instructor just "goes on and on" about Macs too. However, he IS a professional graphics designer owning his own firm and making HUGE bucks doing it. He will also tell you that a Mac is the best choice for graphic design, but a PC is the best choice for all around use. I am not sure what his reasons are for praising the Mac so high for graphics though, except that he always points out all the neat keyboard functions/quick key functions designed into a Mac for use with Adobe software. I really think that Adobe is the key here. Adobe and Mac must be sleeping partners.

The only reasons macs are still used in graphics design is because photoshop and other progs are specifically designed to run better on macs - just like some pc progs are "optimized for direct 3d" or something like that. BUT - most high end animation and stuff don't use macs, they use pc's running unix - lightwave is optimized for windows and linux/unix. Don't believe me - watch the making of Shrek on the DVD. Those comps are pc's running unix - something very clear to pick out.
Just my little tidbit of information.
