How Many Of You Do Your Own Income Taxes?

I'm curious. I keep reading rules over until I thoroughly confuse myself to no end. I'm ready to throw in the towel and have someone else do them. Worse part, I thought I had them done and sent them in already, just to have a late form arrive today. Now I have to file a 1040X for Fed and State. Grrrrrrrrrrr

Thanks to Ms_Pammy, I found a free tax program that was EZ as it can get. Search for TaxAct. Free download, $7.95 to file. They market upgrades throughout the program, but wth, it's free. If it's too late for you maybe someone else will be able to benefit from this.

Hi blebs99.....I've always done my own except once. I had sold a house, bought a new house, moved, and had recived some stock from my grandparents estate.......
I had that one done for me.
I do get a kick out of folk who file an EZ and hire it done.

I do my own, that way the homicide will be justified. Heh, the EZ is well, easy. The 1040 is fine if ya keep track of EVERYTHING, and write down all yer totals in a manner you can access em. The easiest way to get screwed up, is try and figure out the logic behind and of it, its like a big connect the dots puzzle, just follow the directions, and double/triple check yerself on each step. Leave it alone for 3-4 days, and then go back and do em one more time, that way yer arse is covered.

i couldn't, too complicated...well..for this year atleast. maybe next year. i took it to h&r block. it costs a bit, but it was worth it to seen them run around and scream at each other trying to figure out how to do my taxes.....for TWO hours. i got my moneys worth. heh

Well after downloading tax act and running the numbers through, I still have to do an amended 1040x, but at least I know what I've done so far, isn't going to hurt me.
Corporations really tick me off when they send late forms! The whole reason why I waited until the 1st of Feb to mail it, was to be sure I recieved everything that was coming. Low and behold wouldn't you know it, a late form after I already mailed the darn thing in. I think I might just let someone else do it.
Brembo, your right, I've had to walk away and come back and then I get a completely different meaning out of what I'm reading and it's really messing with my head!

Blebs,
My CPA has to call for help on my taxes! hehehehehehh
I have a hard enough time just getting my books to him!
You can sure tell the people that get money back (file in January)
and the people that always have to pay (minimum extention til August!)
Did I mention that I hate the IRS?...

First time in my life I owe money, $411.00 to be exact. All because I got a gift(bonus) of $28000 this year from my employer. Usually I get $4000 back from the IRS. Oh well, $411 not that big of deal.

Tell me, what's to like about the IRS?
I wish I could have just done a EZ form!!!
*Falls on floor in fetal position with middle finger extended*
I want to make some rules for the IRS to follow. I'll be sure to have them going from publication to publication and filling out all sorts of unnecessary worksheets, then have them write their results in the wrong darn columns.
Why? Because they can't give you a simple answer to a simple question!

Already done and filed...I've done my own taxes for the last 17 years (ever since my first job in high school)...
This year, I used Turbo Tax for my federal, and used a secure web site to do my state taxes (which is how I did it last year - very easy to use)

Would anyone care to explain this entry, found in Publication 17 page 95?
Illegal Income
Illegal Income, such as stolen or embezzeled funds, must be included in your income on Line 21 of Form 1040, or on Schedule C or Schedule C-EZ (Form 1040) if from your self-employment activity.
Did the IRS forget anybody? Not even the criminal escapes the Tax man!

lol, they put it there because there are people stupid enough to report it...
Sort of like the high school student who took a bag of heroin into a police station to get it tested because he thought he was getting ripped by his dealer...

I can't help but laugh myself to death on that one!
Sorry Indy, had to redo some of the post. I'm not stupid and I sure made it sound like it. LOL

I do,I use TaxCut and I e-file and get it deposited directly into my checking account in about a week(state & fed).I just did it last night as a matter of fact, and I bought TaxCut deluxe and I get a free state TaxCut and a free Money 2002( I have used MS money for several years) and I also get rebates on the e-filing so all I pay for all the software and filing is $20.00.

Your Tax Returns sound harder than mine.
I do mine, my friends, my parents, and anyone else that asks me.
I never have any problems and I do them by hand.
The good old fashion way.

If you have anything reportable on K-1 forms (partnerships and such), you won't get them until May.

I'll keep that in mind poptom. Unfortunately, this was a 1099-R from my wifes last job.

Hi blebs99
I've always done ours and then my sister checks it over. I always hate tax season unless I know we are getting money back. I'm still waiting for 2 T-4's before I can do ours.

Been doing my own taxes and others since I was 18, used to do them the good ol fashion way, but for the last 3 years I use Turbo-tax for the web...it's quick & easy its also easy if you need to Amend them. If also helps that I'm in accounting.
Blebs....Did you figure out how to amend your taxes to fix the problem? If not how did you file them?

I usually do my own taxes using Turbo Tax, but this year I used an accountant--I had a complex year (new house, capital gains, inheritance from multiple states, and some IRA issues) that I didn't think Turbo Tax could handle. So, paying $95.00 to get my taxes done in 30 minutes by an accountant didn't seem too unreasonable--especially since I ended up with a pretty big refund in the end.

Have done my own the last few years using TaxCut and e-filing.
Real quick refunds using direct deposit.
