Gaming over a Router

I'm not sure if I'm the only one who has this problem, but it's driving me crazy.
I am using a LinkSys Router, 8 port hub, and I'm on cable. Essentially I have 6 people sharing one IP, but that doesn't seem to effect my ping in games. (Generally on sites with around 40-50 ping)
The problem is on occasion my ping will jump to 300 and I will lag out for a couple seconds. This happens so frequently it makes gaming unplayable. I want my 56k back!
Any help or answers are appreciated!

Are all 6 puters gaming?
What is the game?

No, it's just me on the server.
Halflife is generally the one I play, but it's noticable in all games.

Can the router allocate bandwidth for diff ips? If not, I would suggest a linux box after the router that can, so you can give your server/gaming machine more bandwidth and priority on the internet.

I don't have an extra box, otherwise I would totally agree with that.
Unfortunately the Linksys doesn't have Bandwidth sharing features.

Linksys and games do not mix (Fact) look at the common threads on the linky, at any site all have problems over and over with the linky.

If you want perfect gameing DONT BUY LINKSYS.

Cable (not the most reliable/steady performing connection for gaming) + Linksys router (not the most robust performing router) + hub (switch is better for serious gaming) = bummer!
