B=Byte, b=bit
1B=8Bits
56Kb/sec yield 5 to 6 KB/sec. There is system overhead, so you get around 80%.
3Mb/sec. Down will yield about 300KB/sec.
60 times faster then your modem WOW.

3Mb/s is about 375KB/s. If that is what they've promised you then your very very lucky

Check for availability here:
http://www.optonline.net. I'm not sure but I think that OptimumOnline is mainly in the New England area.

I'm on Sympatico in Canada that is post as being 1Mbps/100Kbps and I'm running at 1.444Mbps/137Kbps.
But it realy helps the most that I'm like a mile away from the main server in town!

Here in the netherlands i have athome and I get 400 till sometimes 800 kb/s download speed easily. This is really awesome for that kind of cash (40 dollar/month).
oh, they don't give a **** about how many you download. Sometimes I do gigabytes a day and you don't hear them complain about it.
Upload is not so good and 20kb/s upload is the absolute max.
oh well, you can't have it all ;-)

Well, athome rules i think. But it rules more in your country I suppose.
They capped my upload to 16kb/s but download is 600-700kb/s standard.
Why do they cap that upload so much?

They cap it because outgoing bandwidth is more expensive than incoming. Also, people tend to run servers if they have a high upload, so to try and discourage this, they cap everyone.

Ok, I understand that but look at athome in Vancouver. 200-300kbps !!! I don't think that is capping...

From what I hear, @Home is in the process of capping everyone to their standard (16KBps). They might not have done it yet in Vancouver.
