New guy here. I recently barreled head first into this tweaking thinking I knew what I was doing. Boy was I stupid. I backed up my registry to my C: drive, but my girlfriend deleted the backup for some reason. I proceeded to download the Registry patch for Windows 98SE. Then I downloaded the Microsoft patch to fix the bug in 98SE.

Here's where things go wrong. The patches did not affect my computer in a negative way. It still works perfectly. But now I've changed my registry settings and I don't have a backup anymore. Plus, I've also found out that my IP is wrong when I did the TCP/IP analyzer.

So obviously all the readings are completely wrong and obviously readings of the old IP I had with AT&T before I had broadband installed. Is there anyway I can get rid of these new registry settings the patch created and also get rid of Microsft patch without the backup? If so, can you please help? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really need to start completely over and make sure my IP is correct and I have the original settings.

Umm old IP, dude i dont think thats possible, what service u got for broadband?

If your current setup works fine write down your current TCP/IP settings then Re-install 98SE OVER your current operating system. This should put your registry back to where it was at before you started tweaking. :-)

As far as getting your old setting's back, run back to default patch on patch page, this will only remove SG patches that were installed and not mess with other registry settings, do you still have your old 56K Modem installed , you can backup registry after you run back to default patch, foolow instructions on help page below in signature

Here's what happened. I had a dialup with AT&T. I had cable installed from Charter Communications, and cancelled the second phone line and internet service with AT&T. The modem is still installed on the computer but it's no longer in use. My cable is installed through USB, because I didn't have an ethernet card installed on my computer when I bought it, because we didn't even have broadband service. Plus, the person that installed my cable stated that unless you have a lot of peripherals on your computer, it's not going to make much difference either way.

I'll install the patch removing the new registry settings.

Probably the best thing for you to do is call your provider and have them send someone out and fix the problem, I know thats not what you wanted to hear but it is there job to get you up and running, sorry

Well, I'm up and running and the cable modem is working fine. It's just not the speed I think I should be getting.
