It seems some people do not know how to do speed test correctly, see help page below in signature, 2nd page at bottem under Tips.
Nothing can be running, some people believe if you close a program, then it is not running, wrong, it is not active, but it is running, exit out of everything next to time except display and volume.
Clearing temp internet files, top of IE, tools, internet tools, delete files, delete offline content, and clear history every time you test.
Every wonder why a fresh install runs faster, well if you did not totally mess it up it is because a fresh install has a registry that is not fragmented, your Windows defragmentor only defrags hard drive, not registry, so after deleting things and tweaking your registry becomes fragmented, which cuts down on performance and speed. Save your pennies and buy something that will defrag registry.
Registry cleaner does not defrag but cleans out registry.
Always reboot before speed teting so you have all your RAM available, take test at http://www.pcpitstop.com and at end of test click on Windows-resourses tells you, you need the highest to 100 as you can get.
Auto-update-turn off
system restore--turn off, These are nice if you have alot of RAM, but if you only have alittle, turn off.
Remember exit out of AIM, ICQ all of it, hope this helps alittle. :) :)

I want all you people who are not a home during day to see this,
I use Fix-it utilities I've had it for 5 years and could not live without it, it has virus scanner, defrags registry, defrags hard drive, I have 30 Gig hard drive and it takes 30 seconds, plus a lot more, but you must have something to defrag your registry, perfomance is speed, and if your registry is badly fragmented, there goes your speed :) :) :) http://www.ontrack.com/fixit/

No I'm trying to send a message to people like you, but if you insist on using that stuff that starts with "Nort, then more RAM is what you need :D :D

Lobo-

the link doesn't seem to work well, at least for me it isn't working.

secondly, is it freeware or do you have to pay for it?

third, I have norton utilities, does it have a reg defrgger in it? does anyone know?

I have looked through it but cannot seem to find a reg defragger in it, but I am not too used to having it either.

lastly, you can also turn off the speaker in the taskbar if you so choose:

Simply go to the control panel and open sounds and multimedia at bottom there is a box to check to display icon in taskbar, if you uncheck it the icon is gone.

I got plenty of RAM, but also have set norton utilities and all the proggies it has to manual so they don't run unless I turn them on :)

The link works now Lance, I don't know if Norton has that or not, they make good software, just uses alot of resourses :) :)
And no it's not free but well worth the pennies :D , Man this board is about to drive me to drink, I know they are working hard on it but, I've fallen and can't get up

It's weird, some work, some don't, just do 1 at a time, if it does not work, take it out right then to avoid conflicts later :) :)

My first line test was 292KB/sec

then it kept going down, even after deleting files

I got it back up to 175KB/sec

I'm going to have to save up for FixIt

I would like to know where I can get XP. I know it was posted a while ago, but that thread is weeks old. Do they have a downloadable version? Feel free to e-mail me if you don't want to get in trouble. I'll give anyone who helps a cyper kiss :)

Lobo's right in what he had in his first post , it seems that people have forgotten the basics when doing a speed test....I'm guilty of it too.... :rolleyes: Also I use Norton SystemWorks and it does have a registry defragger (Norton calls it "Norton Optimization Wizard") you'll find it under Norton Utilities.......

Check this out...one way to defrag was mentioned earlier but would work only on Win9x...here's something for Win2k that is freeware.

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freew ... frag.shtml

Any thoughts on this program?

Tried PC Pitstop

Hey Lobo,

I did as you instructed to do and these are the test results:

Text Block Size 200 KB Download Time 5050 ms Receive Buffer 8192 bytes Transmission Speed 317 Kb/s

Upload Speed 271 Kb/s

If these numbers are impressive, maybe its because I added to keys to Windows 98 that were from the Windows 2000 and Windows NT registery.

Here are the keys I added and my systems specs.

SYSTEM
Window 98
Cyrix MII 300Mhz
192 MB of SDRam
6.4 Gig HD
1.6 Gig HD
Riva TNT 16 MB Video
SiS 5598 Sound Card
Cable Modem by Tobisha pcx100
Biostar Socket 7 motherboard w/512 cache

KEYS ADDED TO WIN98 REG
{Windows NT Cache Tweak}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro
l\Session Manager\Memory Management

SecondLevelDataCache=00,02,00,00

{Window 2000 Cable/DSL Tweak}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

DefaultTTL=80,00,00,00
EnablePMTUBHDetect=00,00,00,00
EnablePMTUDiscovery=01,00,00,00
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize=4c,ae,05,00
SackOpts=01,00,00,00
Tcp1323Opts=03,00,00,00
TcpWindowSize=4e,ae,05,00

So got any answers to help me out.....Mucho Gracias,

Robert T

Kismatic, the answer is Yes....

Lance , what version of NSW do you have ? Norton Disk Doctor is like Windows Scan Disk. I have NSW 2001, had 2000 and the Norton Optimization Wizard was in with Speed Disk...At least I thought it was....

I have NSW 2001 :)

I couldn't find what you were looking for so I just started lookin around and I found that.

Maybe you are talkin about something else, but when I opened it up it was goin through the reg.................figured it must be the right one :confused:

If ya like I can post a pic of it to show ya where I pull it up from, the path to it I mean

or you can post yours and I can see it so that i know if I am just blind, that is quite possible I am blind at times :( I looked a few times to be sure though but didn't see what you had said

lance...I would post a screen shot of mine but I have no idea how you do that.....Anyway from looking at yours Norton Optimization Wizard is NOT installed , Norton WinDoctor fixes problems within Windows and Yes it fixes registry problems but it is not what you and I are talking about...Run the Norton Setup again and go to the Installation Type it will default to "Typical" click next then highlight Norton Utilities then click "Customize" look for Norton Optimization Wizard and put a check there , finish the install then see if it is there, it should be between Norton Disk Doctor and Norton System Doctor on your screenshot...Let me know ............

do a scan for webhancer and see what comes up. I just found it on my system and if you got it, then it is from that proggy you just told me about. It is spyware regardless.

You're not going to find an "Optimization Wizard".
It's a Win9x app only. :cool:

Micro-

thanx for the clarification :)

Lobo-

what the heck are you talkin about? to put a screenshot on here you have to upload it to a URL then use the ]IMG] URL to the image[/IMG[ tags to copy it to the reply box.

not saying you are wrong, just that this is the only way I can get an IMG into here.

If that way that you said does work then, I appologize :) but as of yet the only way for me to get one on here is to upload it to a URL then bring the image addy and put it inside of IMG tags.

Lance....so when you reran the Norton Setup the Norton Optimization Wizard was greyed out ? Micro said it's a Win9x app only, but I went looking around the Norton site they have error fixes for Win Me and the Norton Optimization Wizard ??? I'm just curious because my brother bought NSW 2001 and one of his PC's has Win Me....
