DNS Priority Tweak

Found this in another forum...works great on WinME (and on 98, 98se...win95 users need to upgrade to winsock2)doesn't work on Win2000 but the gurus here might know how to adapt it to the different registry entries...

Copy and paste the following text into notepad...then save as [filename].reg doubleclick to merge into registry...or you can just enter the hex values if ya want to :)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP\ServiceProvider]
"LocalPriority"=hex:05,00,00,00
"HostsPriority"=hex:06,00,00,00
"DnsPriority"=hex:07,00,00,00
"NetbtPriority"=hex:08,00,00,00
"class"=hex:08,00,00,00

Speeds up websurfing for me...cuts the lag accessing web pages...of course, BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST...and I wouldn't recommend it for modem users...

This section describes variables for subkeys that appear in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP\ServiceProvider
The following keys describe the order used to resolve host names. A lower number sets a higher priority for name resolution. These settings are used for 16-bit Windows Sockets, which need to rely on the resolvers that are expected to take the least time. The numbers indicate the default values specified in Windows.

Note that the below values apply to Windows Sockets 1.1, and are not used if Windows Sockets 2.0 is installed (this is the default for Windows 98, and is an option for Windows 95).

LocalPriority = 499
HostsPriority = 500
DNSPriority = 2000
NetbtPriority = 2001

Check this thread...maybe I'm on crack but it did cause a noticible speed-up in web surfing...on a medium-speed cable system anyway...

Actually no, this didn't have anything to do with it...and my computer's running fine since installing the new values...and my system IS more responsive with DNS requests...the only bad things I read about it on the 3dfiles section was from modem users had negative effects there...
