hello guys its me again ... im new to this tweaking stuff on dsl i just want to boost up my download speed to around 50k or so ... anyways i installed the speedpatch and tried the tcp tester ... it gave me :

TCP options string = 020405780103030201010402

MTU = 1440
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.

MSS = 1400
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1400, which is equal to MSS.
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 255552
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 63888
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
515200 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 8)
257600 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 4)
128800 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 2)
64400 (MSS x 46)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10222.08 kbps (1277.76 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4088.832 kbps (511.104 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 49 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

----------------
then i tried lowering the mtu (1472 and 1486) but still the tcp tester reads it as :
MTU = 1440
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.

i also read the enternet fix from dannjr but im still confused ... so before i do stuffs on my pc ... i figured out to consult u guys first ... so if anyone can help me out pls do so ...

im on pacbell dsl
using netgear router

Is there new firmware for the router. Most of these consumer routers are getting better with there firmware..
If your running the original firmware I suggest doing that.

Anyone else

You should telnet to the router and enter the following command at 24.8 at command prompt.

ip adj wanif0 1452

This will increase the current MSS limit to 1452, hence the tweak test will report MTU as 1492. The catch is that every time your PPPoE disconnects and re-connects it will revert back to MSS limit of 1400 (MTU of 1440) and needs to be entered after PPPoE connects again. This command does not work before PPPoE connects.

hello ... thanks for the help but ... what do u mean telnet to the router at 24.8 ??? could u like tell me the step by step commands i should type on command prompt ...
thanks again

I am NOT an expert in either Telnet or this router, but this is what I have been told:

Telnet to the Router:

Start Button | Run... type "telnet 192.168.0.1" (no quotes) and press OK. Now enter your password... the original is 1234. You will get a menu.

In the menu, find 24.8. At command prompt type: "ip adj wanif0 1452" (no quotes). Enter.

This will not last if the PPPoE connection is turned off -- yet. It is being looked into.

This is the best I can do without actually having this router. Does anyone else have this router? Can you be more specific? Thanks.

now that i adjusted the mtu what should i do next ??? ... and um i have a netgear rt314 router ... what do u mean if anybody else have this router ? if u mean i share internet connection , yes 2 computers are connected in that router ...
well ill just wait 4 ur next directions then ... thanks :D

Sorry to confuse you. You test shows that the Telnet worked -- you now have an MTU of 1492 and an MSS of 1452. This is the BEST you can get on your connection.

I asked for "anyone else" just in case my instructions were NOT good enough!! Since I don't have the Netgear router, I cannot test my instructions, so I was just trying to cover my arse! I am glad it worked.

Beyond that, you test looks pretty good. Lobo, any other thoughts??

this is what i got from dsl reports :

Browsers would show : about a 39.6 k/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 109589 bps, or 109 kbps

my question is , if im getting the speed i should get or if i need to complain to my isp ??? and another thing does the length of the phone line affect speed ? and um what other factors might affect my connection ????? (eg. phone line , etc)

im subscribed to pacbell dsl
384 Kbps - 1.5 Mbps/128 Kbps
:D thanks ...

You will not have speed during peek hours, now What size CPU do you have and don't apply another speed patch without going back to default first, his does that for you but his is the only one, Now what size CPU :)

Cablenuts patch uninstalled our faster loading of web pages patch, you need to do this:
This is a must unless you the future in want to format because you did not do it, please do this. First bring up REGEDIT, type REGEDIT in your run box and hit OK.
Under Registry at the top of the box, click on that, now click on Export Registry File, a box will come up asking where you want to export it to, just put it in your C drive, then name it at the bottem of box Default Registry plus date. Click on ALL at the bottom so it copies all of your registry.
Click on save. Do not update this copy, update copy 2.
Now if you ever get in trouble or want the old regestry back, bring REGEDIT back up and click on Registry and click on import registry file, go to your C drive and click on registry and click open, reboot and your good to go.
Anytime you add a new program, backup again, any program, back it up to the same place as the last one, it will overwrite it. If you do not backup after each new program is instaled you will not have those setting's in regestry if you have to backup for some reason.
Do this 2 times, one to save as default, the other to update as neccessary, Call first one -default, second-updated registry so you know which is which, you may add the date too.

Do nothing else in this box as it is the heart of your computer, just what it says above and no more!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go to main page this site, select patches on left side of page,
go down until you see Web Patch - faster loading of Web Pages
Select the one for your OS, and download.
To install, click on what you just downloaded-unzip to program files, go there and click on it, click yes and reboot, your done.

How do do speed test
1. The best time is early in the morning (3 AM - 6 AM)
2. Make sure defrag has been run so no files are fragmented
3. Delete Temp internet files, not while testing, but after each test. IE browser, click tools, internet options, click on delete files and no this will not harm system, just get rid of temp files
4. Go to a fast server such as www.happypuppy.com and click on 10 demos, select a LARGE file to download (not all of it , just most of it, before you click cancel) this will show you how fast you are downloading, it's not going to be quick except except early in morning when not many people on net. I recommend you go to www.analogX.com and download Net State live, run this while downloading as it will give you avg of your download speed, really all you need on Net Stat is incoming data, incoming totals and Local machine, right click on Net Stat anywhere, stactics and check these 3 items, the rest need not be checked unless you want them, all you care about is average.
Put system defrag in scheduled tasks to run everyday.
5. Probably the most important, nothing can be running during test, no firewalls, no virus stuff, no ICQ, no AIM (some of you may have to go into BIOS to disable virus scanner, nothing running except Net Stat live
Scheduled tasks will run disk defrag, 98 & SE in Taskbar, WIN ME in control panel
The people who want speed surfing or doing whatever must close all other programs.
(NOTE: at present time www.AOL.com seems to be fastest download site, at bottom download aol 6.0)
Or if you wish you may go to www.testmyspeed.com and do one of the online tests, these vary to much for me but you may like them. Another one is at www.dslreports.com/tools

hi ! ... i have a p3 600 , 256 mb ram ...
ok ill install that patch ... and when i want to go to windows default , should i only uninstall cablenut and use the default windows patch from speedguide ??? ... thanks ...

First you need to use Cablesnuts fast patch,
just click on Cablenut 4.0 on desktop, then click on ccs, then PPPoE, then fast whatever you have, when you uninstall Cablenut you are at default, our default just takes out what our patch puts in, reboot after swicthing to fast :)

oh by the way ... regarding my question ... what factors might affect speed ??? ... like length of phone line , etc

Yes as long as it is for PPPoE :) and your on a 9x system 98 or SE, or ME,

I don't think length would matter if cord was good unless it was way to long, you can't get speed at night, not until real late. :p

Put it back like it was, that RWIN is way to large for a PPPoE connection :)

what ideal values should i use on rwin ? :D

Posted: Tue Mar 27, 2001 4:24 pm

Whatever the patch put in are the best values, you may be able to download quicker but you will have packet loss and high pings,
you are going to keep fooling with that until you have to format it. The people who made patch know far better than you or I what is best, put it back like it was and leave it alone :)
