I have no problems with the ones I have worked with. There are also alot of other people that don't have any problems either. Do you think maybe its YOU or your ISP that doesn't know what their doing? I have a hard time understanding that a product thats had best in home/small business router being so crapy.

I think we who are having problems with our internet connections are trying to narrow down the posibilities. Perhaps you have a better ISP than others do. I'm glad that your router works fine...

It's ture, there are more problems associated w/ the Linky router than any other consumer router. The forum proves this, just look at all the posts from Linky owners.

maybe that's because way more linksys routers are sold than any other...more owners, more potential problems...just a thought.

Not knowing anything about routers, I blindly bought a Netgear RT314.
It has been the best computing investment I have made to date. I have 3 computers sharing the modem ( 1 wireless ). The setup was incredibly easy and my connecting speeds with all three accessing are quicker than when it was just one.

Lemme tell ya somethin about Linksys. To sum it up? Great for internet sharing, bad for game sharing on more than 1 pc. Plain and simple. Simply put, by Linksys's own admission t ome, you cannot forward ports to more than 1 pc on the lan. If you decide to make a DMZ, then the minute you add anything to the port forwarding section, DMZ is non-existent. Had it 1 day, bought it back the next. Got a Netgear RT314 (Have 1 allready)
cause I cant afford the Netopia , its fine for my purpose which is to only have two people on my LAN play internet games, not to host. But Ive installed plenty of Netopia's, Netgears in clients usually without a hitch. But for online gaming, dont even bother with the linksys. :P

so, u think that the netgear would more efficiently run 2 UT connection through 1 adsl pac bell (1200 dl 105 upload) account... cuz my linksys- it aint workin... BAD PING SPIKES all the time (800+ ms). With just one computer connected its fine, <100 ping. Why would this be, what is wrong with linksys? sure the netgear is faster but not by that much. Ive tried everything, tweaks, netspeeds, but nothing works. it really sucks, i only bought the thing to play games online simultaneously. some say my upload speed is too paultry, but sheet - its still 3 times that of cable modem (which upload at 33 kb/s). HELP ME, should i take the linksys back and exchange with netgear?

yes get the netgear it has a better NAT processor then the linksys

SheepThrill, I can say that for me, the NetGear ran 2 concurrent connections to the same public UT server fine for me. I had the Linksys for a few weeks until I found out about it's problems when you try to host a game server through it. I then got the NetGear RT314, I could game on both my gaming rings on the LAN, out through the router, to the same UT server, and both pings were in the 50 - 60 range. Going single computer, pings are usually 40 - 50. So I can tell you that 2 computer behind the NetGear, SpeedStream aDSL connection, 685/115 benchmarked speeds, worked fine for me. I've since splurged and gotten a Netopia R910 router, because even the NetGear had problems hosting UT/Rune servers.


As to Dements comment, I work for a computer VAR, I do onsite tech/networking. My specialty is building small to medium Windows networks, and my most popular gig lately is giving internet access to smaller office networks via broad bandwidth and routers. For these networks, all they need is outgoing traffic, like e-mail and browsing. So the Linky is great for that, I've done over 25 of those installs, I can do them in my sleep now. Wonderfully easy product to setup, manage, if clients call be cuz it's down I can walk them through the web admin and connecting right over my cell phone.

It's a great product for that, and I'll continue to sell it. But as you see, most of the legitimate problems come from many of us who push the product past it's limits. Sure many of the problems are just "I can't set it up, can't see the admin page, can't ping the router". That's just newbie errors. But many of the problems are fully legitimate from people who know what they are doing, and people who expect this product to perform as advertised. You just can't expect a 99 dollar Linky to perform the same jobs as a 400, 600, 800 dollar Cisco or Netopia, and I think they try to market it close to that feature wise.

to add real quick. Netgear was a subdivision of bay networks. which is now part of nortel. basically they have a better backing and a large stock pile enterprise level technology that they can stuff into the netgear routers. take last generations enterprise level NAT and put it in the home and small office arena. cheap, easy, and powerful. read the specs of the linky and the netgear, i mean the real specs. you'll see.

Yup, Bay Networks makes for some good stuff. Although NetGear had their boxes totally outsourced to Xytel. I found my NetGear much faster than the Linky...and my Netopia much faster than both!

What I liked about the NetGear, for about the same price as the Linksys, although it had less bells and whistles, the components that it had were of far superior quality. Just pick up the little box, feels nice and heavy, solid. Much better hardware "under the hood."

Everything you stated in the above post I agree with 100%. Couldnt have said it any better. So take the advice from the peeps here posting SHEEPTHRILL... When you do something often enough, its almost second nature to guys like us. Wanna host and play or host more than 1? Choose the netgear RT314 at the least, better The Netopia if you can afford it.
