Who has the best Free anti-virus? I'm wiping clean a laptop we're giving to a relative and will be reinstalling win7 from scratch. One of the basic things I'd like to install is a anti-virus for them. I've been using MSE, but from what I've been reading and hearing I think I may be going the "paid" route soon.

Both Avast and AVG have decent free versions, other than MSE.

I'm currently giving BitDefenders free version another run on my new laptop that I'm typing from now. My only 2 dislikes of it...and they're actually minor things, ...it requires registration, and it has pretty much zero configuration. Which isn't really a big deal for home users. Nag free otherwise. Very VERY light product.

On my prior laptop, I was giving Qihoo 360 Security a try...which runs triple engines...one of which is BitDefenders. Nice product, no registration, nag free. Some people don't like that fact that it comes from China, that it shouldn't be trusted. China is big on making itself a huge player on the internet...just look at our forums active visitor list now, you see >75% of the web crawler spiders are Baidu spiders (The other big software brand in China). 10-15 years ago people didn't like Kaspersky because it came from Russia. people were hesitant on Eset back then too because it was from Slovakia.

Panda also has a great free AV product that I used on my prior laptop for around a year. No registration, and mostly nag free. I think once every 90 days I'd see a prompt to upgrade to pro version.

That was one thing I liked about MSE....zero nags, no registration.

Avast...I'm so-so on it. Decent detection, odd interface, I'm not sure if they got rid of the yearly subscription renewal yet..that was a big show stopper for me. (because the peoples computers you install it on..won't renew it). A little heavy on rigs.

Avira...decent detection, but often a higher false positive rate, and wicked wicked naggy to upgrade to Pro version.

AVG...can't find a herpe in a Mexican wh0...ouse...blind as a bat for malware. System seizing browser toolbar, nag nag nag.
