Using a SSD as your only HDD

I'd like to speed up my wife's laptop with an SSD. Fortunately she doesn't save a lot of things so a 240gb drive would be more than enough. We make backups once a week of all our important info. What do you think about just having 1 SSD on the laptop and nothing else i.e. 2nd HDD for storage? Her laptop is just used at home, not for work or anything critical. If it was to go down, taking day or two to get it back up wouldn't really hurt us.

i say do it, i use my 2 older SSDs in raid-0 for 2 years now no trouble at all

I use an SSD in my laptop not only to speed it up. But the battery life is incredible now! I used the guide found on the main page of SG to disable tons of stuff I don't use to prevent wear and tear from unnecessary write to it (logs, temps, all that garbage) Most importantly, Make sure you do a fresh install, If not. At least 4k align the drive and leave 10% slack for Trim

If she doesn't have much storage needs, and you can live without it for a day or two, and you keep image backups...then go for it.
Just get a good one like Intel or Crucial or Samsung. See wicked high failure rates with lower brands.

I just recently bought an ASUS K75DE. One of the first things I did was swap out the 5400 RPM spinner for a Crucial M4 SSD. I actually put 2 SSD's in it, it has dual drive bays. 128 gig for the OS and 256 gig for Data. 10 second boot time with fast boot etc turned off.

SSD prices have been coming down. Please note that if the laptop does not have SATA3, the speed will be throttled somewhat.

Yes price is coming down and reliability and quality are going up.

If you do not need to save so many things that can replace a small point capacity, hard drive, hard drive size and the quality is good or bad points, but also affect the computer speed.

I use a single 150g ssd on this system and store all my files i dont need constantly on a NAS box, it cost me £30 and an old sata drive i had laying around. And i can access it from any computer on my network.

That's great.. Just keep backups of that SATA drive for when it fails.
