Cable Problems

Well I finally called @home tech support about all the packet loss I have been getting.

To summarize my problem real quick: When I play (TFC) online I get freezing that lasts about 3 seconds and happens about every 5-10 seconds. It makes my ping go from about 40-60 to about 400 during this time.

Anyways, the first lady runs some tests and says “I might be seeing a small packet loss problem but can't be sure until you install or @home software so we can run net diag tests.” So I D/L it and install it. Call back and get a different lady, she runs the diag tests and says, "nothing is wrong with your cable connection, it has to be the server. Try different servers." That is bull****. I have tried tons of servers. All of them end up in the same result, plus the fact that on 56K it was fine, just higher ping.

What can I do now? This is starting to irritate me.

yo the same thing happened to me. What you are experiencing is a temporary packet loss every few seconds. There is nothing you can do about the problem. They wont listen to you. The cable company changes things all the time. Wait about a week or two and it will be fixed. Trust me.

When it happened to me I called them up and they also said my connection was fine and nothing could possibly be wrong. They also gave me all that crap about how it is the servers i was playin on. So I told them they were full of **** and I waited about a week. The problem stopped

I came to the forum today to find out if I can find a program to run in the background while I'm online gaming. I have the exact same problem. CS or TFC games and I have a ping of 40-50 then it spikes to 400 then it goes back down. All this over and over again. It takes me 10 tries to get thru one dang door. THis crap is getting to me now. I need a program that will monitor all traffic in and out of my machine. So I can catch the packet loss and log it to send to my ISP. Then I will have proof and they will have to fix it or credit my account. Or I will be switching to DSL or the other cable company in town. Along with everyone I know who games.

I feel your pain Driven, I just started experiencing this problem myself (@home in Chicago). I thought when my horrible pings stopped (upwards of 600ms at times) that my troubles with @home were over. Silly me! Good for you for complaining. Lets hope DustNurEye is right and the problem will correct itself (wishful thinking?) Good luck, you and I and all of us need it...

LOL Funny thing. I live about 20 mile South of Chicago(@crap here too). About a couple weeks ago, i started experiencing this. It was right when i installed a Geforce2 Ultra, so i wasnt sure what what causing it. Did a reformat and all and it still was there. Im bout to whip this pc outta the window. Finaaly get the damn rig stable, and now i have horrid pausing every 5 secs. Kills me every time!!!

Not to mention i just got over a 3 month escapade with AT&T about my ping being alittle high during the entire day and evening, everday for those 3 months. Couldnt connect to a local server here in Chicago under 300. Alittle net congestion they tell me. (_)_)==========> AT&T

Never call them. Usually get some young person who has no idea about what their talking about or you just get complete BS, to the point to were you wanna laugh right at them.

I always find my solutions on some sort of forum on the net.

Did u guys tweak your cable? If u did that might be the problem. When many people start tweaking their cable it gets slower, except to the people that don't tweak their cable.

i find when calling tech support, sum of the people have diffrent opiniongs on how to fix them, and half of them are just plain idiots. Just call them back until u get the results you want.

Hi there .. new to this forum, but not new to @home .

I 've been to @home since Februar 2000, and it was all fine .. until the **** happened in August 2000.
Since then I got ****ED UP internet ... Damn ... can't play online, because I get kicked out of the net 10 times a day .. mostly between 4 - 6 pm and 8 pm to 4 am.

Like the online gaming stuff .... I got banned from Midtown Madness 1 for 3 months because my ping was between 5000 - 13000 ... ****ED UP...

So, nowadays @home is called @sloom (in english: @slow / @crapp)

Now I've downed some patch thing from this site ... and I have to say .... it helps ... but still not on FTP'zzz ... before patching I got max 5kb/s where otherzzz got min. 40kb/s / max 290 kb/s using Chello or Casema. Now I get 6 kb/s ... max .. DAMN

Well .,.. email me at: mryouri@home.nl (if the mail comes through :P ) if you know any ftp boost em upz ... or if you wanna tel me some good things about stuff etc.

Greetz eLecTro

Ps. electro was already in use ... but I'm dj eLecTro ... so I'm the one and only eLecTro ....

I have a question. On the games in question have you guys resently installed a new patch for your games?
Some new patches that I have installed where full of bugs like Runes 1.06 and 1.07.
PPL have been mad about unstable pings and have concluded that it was the patch.

http://forums.runenews.com/ultimatebb.c ... 7&t=000035

The pausing I've experienced in Serious Sam was the fps, "frames per second" dropping down so low (anything below 10 fps is choppy, anything above 35 is playable) that my character became paused or jerky and I have a 3d prophet ultra 64mb geforce 2 but the more realestate your vid card has to process the harder it is to process.
We play co-op in Serious Sam and it's the same as the single player but we fight side by side not against each other.
A little trick I figured was to use missles to blow up the trees which in turn upped my fps.

Hope this helps.

Keeping the Faith!

IF u install a patch with bugs in it, it wont make a big diffrence on your ping while playing online.
