Hello,

I received my Dell XPS 15 with i7 processor and 6 gig ram running win7 64 bit over the weekend and was disappointed to see that the download speed measured with speedtest.net is 40-50% slower than on my other 4 year old laptop running XP using the same internet connection (cable).

Let me explain. This speed reduction is when accessing servers outside of Japan (where I am based), so for example, here are the results that I receive when testing with a server in europe:

Win 7:
Server: Prague
Download 2.5 Mb/s
Ping 300 ms

XP:
Server: Prague
Download 4 Mb/s
Ping 300 ms

However, when testing the speed with a server close to me, ie in Japan, my download speed with win 7 is 40-50% faster than with XP.

My issue is that I primarily use my laptop to stream movies from a content provider based in europe and so when using XP to access their server I was getting a very stable download speed of around 5 Mb/s which was more than enough for streaming HD content. However, now with win 7, my download speed from that same server and with same internet connection, varies between 2-3 Mb/s and this is causing HD channels to freeze every few minutes or so.

I have to point out that my XP was tweaked with TCP optimizer. Here are the things that I have tried to do with win 7 but without any success in bringing up that download speed.

1. Ran the TCP Optimizer v3.0.5 with optimal settings
2. Ran SG Vista TCP/IP Patch
3. Deleted Mcafee virus protection
4. Made sure my chip and nic drivers are up to date

None of this worked. I am not an expert however, based on my past experience with XP and the threads that I read, I think the key issue is that win 7 automatically optimizes the TCP Receive / RWIN to a low value, whereas, in XP I had a much higher value and this is probably why I could download content from distant servers at higher speed.

I read the various posts and they all suggest that it is impossible to manually adjust the RWIN values in win 7. So is there any solution here ? Can some of the win 7 settings be changed so that it can optimize the speed of accessing distant servers with high latency? I would be happy to take a hit in my download speeds from closer servers with low latency if I could get a higher download speed from distant servers.

I don't know what else I can try...apart from downgrading to win xp, which I am reluctant to do. Also, I dont think this is an issue with my ISP or movie content provider or with Dell, so I am reaching out to you for help.

I played around with the settings in TCP optimizer and managed to stabilize the download speed to around 3500Kbps with windows 7 (it varied between 1900Kbps and 3900Kbps before using TCP Optimizer). I guess its OK now since I can watch HD movies but I am disappointed as this speed is still way below the 5800Kbps download speed (same server) that I was getting with my old laptop running Windows XP and using same internet provider.

I really don't understand why my windows 7 download speed cannot be increased to at least what I was getting with XP since I am using the same internet provider and my windows 7 laptop is much better than the one running XP.

Any ideas, suggestions, help would be much appreciated!!

I installed http://www.connectify.me and my download speed from nearby server (http://www.speedtest.net) fell from 70 Mb/s to about 55 Mb/s and when tested through ISP's tool, speed fell from about 120 Mb/s to 80 Mb/s. However, the good news is that the download speed for the streaming tv content provider (distant server) increased from 3500Kbps to around 4800Kbps...almost close to what it was with XP.

I have no idea why this happened since I got the above new download speeds when connectify was running (a wifi spot through my lan) and also when connectify was switched off.

It would be great if someone can explain this as I would like to explore how I can further increase the download speed from movie streaming server even if it means reducing speed from close server.

Any advice from anyone? Thanks in advance!

If you go to the "Tools" menu at the top, you can select "Speed test" from the drop down menu and then measure the speed of connection with their server. So the speeds that I have reported are coming from this software.

I have the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller on my laptop and the issue is that when I go into properties - advanced menu, I can see a lot of settings options, such as scaling, receive buffer, connection speed etc...but the problem is that they are all in Japanese, which I have difficulty reading. So i reinstalled the driver from their website(http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dow ... Down=false)

, but the advanced settings are still showing in Japanese. I don't understand why since my original windows 7 ultimate was Japanese, so I installed the english pack and changed all other additional language settings to English. I even changed locale to US, but the advanced settings in the network properties are still showing in Japanese. Is this because the ISP is a Japanese company? I am using the Cisco DPC3000 Cable Modem (http://www.cisco.com/web/consumer/produ ... c3000.html) which the ISP provided and installed. Do you know how I can change the language in the network card properties' advanced menu to English? There are many settings available there that sound similar to those in the TCP Optimizer software. Also, do you know what the optimal settings are?

Thanks. I found this setting. It was set to "automatic negotiation", so I changed it to 100 Mbps Full Duplex, however, I didnt get any improvement in speed. My actual internet plan is 160Mbps download, so I also tried with the 1 Gbps Full Duplex, but no change in speed.

Finally I uninstalled "connectify me" (http://www.connectify.me) and my speed dropped again to around 3500Kbps from around 4800Kbps when tested on through that HD streaming player. But when tested with speedtest.net (Japan server) it went up from around 55Mbps to close to 70Mbps and my ISP's testing tool the speed went up from around 80Mbps to 110 Mbps.

This is very interesting as when I install connectifyme again, my speed for the HD streaming player goes back up to around 4800Kbps, which is good and the other speeds from local servers drop down to around 50-80 Mbps, but this is not important as I don't need to access local servers.

Connectifyme basically sets up a wifi hotspot on my laptop so that it uses the LAN wired internet and makes it available for me to use with for example my iphone through wifi. So it seems that this has a good effect on increasing my internet speed for the streaming TV server. I wonder if someone knows what exactly happens here and if there are ways to manually make more of such changes so that I can further increase my speed from 4800Kbps to at least 5500Kbps, which I was getting with my old laptop running XP.

My old laptop is a sony vaio running XP. The new dell laptop runs win 7 ultimate. I dont have XP installed on the new one unless its available by default? I tried with windows 7 in XP mode but no change in speed. Anyway i can watch the streaming tv now with the current speed of around 4,800 Kbps. So even though it is not 5,500 kbps like with XP, i think i will stay with this for now. I sent an email to the support team at "connectify me" to ask them what changes take place to network settings when there software is installled in case this is something that can be tweaked to further increase speed. TCP Auto-Tuning

To turn off the default RWIN auto tuning behavior, (in elevated command prompt) type:

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

The default auto-tuning level is "normal", and the possible settings for the above command are:

disabled: uses a fixed value for the tcp receive window. Limits it to 64KB (limited at 65535).
highlyrestricted: allows the receive window to grow beyond its default value, very conservatively
restricted: somewhat restricted growth of the tcp receive window beyond its default value
normal: default value, allows the receive window to grow to accommodate most conditions
experimental: allows the receive window to grow to accommodate extreme scenarios (not recommended, it can degrade performance in common scenarios, only intended for research purposes. It enables RWIN values of over 16 MB)

Try setting autotuning level to other values and see if it helps.
