I need help... my 12 year old's homework is killing me...

the area of study is compound interest. The example problem I can't even follow...

this problem is 5000(1 + .0375)^9 <---- 9th power

The next step is to "simplify the power"
this is supposed to work out to 1.3blahblahblah or something like that

I thought it would be the same as .0375^9 but that didn't pan out either...

Can someone help me figure out how to "simplify the power"?

THANK YOU IF YOU CAN HELP!

by the way... when I google (or use a calculator) to get the answer I always get the same result returned which is: http://www.google.com/search?q=.0375%5E9

What in the heck does this mean?????

thanks,

First, calculate within the parenthesis, then raise to the 9th power.
