C'mon give me a little more credit than that. I know damn well it's always happened, but it's a phrase I use. It stems from the abnormally high amount of "staged" fights for fricken' internet entertainment. Even though this wasn't the case, it's what I think of. The rage in general these days is what makes me sick.

hmm..... you may be on something here, didn't I see a video of a black girl pulling a gun on a bus and start pointing it towards everyone that picked on her....yet at the same time a black boy tackled her and saved all of those other kids lives?

Sure there is the "ethnicity" as you put in in the video and many others but I think your "I'm just saying" comment was only meant as a poke/troll gesture than too really get into the dirt of things.

You are a racist Brent.

Quit trolling and leave unless you want to see how far your comments can push things before you are banned again.

On who's part?

If it proves racially motivated I hope they are.

Their being racist and Brent's being racist shouldn't play into each other here.

Race aside, seeing those around them cheering with fists raised in the air silhouette boxing is pathetic. We are ALL one step away from flat out being animals.

Ah.

The internet or camera is the only new element. It may seem like an abnormally high ammount, just because before the internet, you wouldn't have access to so many vidoes or sources showing them.

YoS.

The internet, camera phones and texting have made a huge impact on the actions of teens. Adolescent bravado, captured for all to see, becomes a medal and entices more of such behavior. It has become, dare I say common, for teen girl to send body part pictures to their boyfriends (or a boy they wish to steal from another).

Brent,

As you and Fox news pointed out, it was two African Americans attacking a white. Examples of the reverse also exist. Indeed, racial tensions remain in our youth's culture.

be well,
david

Not about making myself feel good Brent, you thankfully have nothing to do with that.

It's about calling you out as a worthless part of SG that trolls and irritates on purpose.

While there is definitely a dearth of reporting on "reverse racism" in the media, there isn't sufficient evidence based on the footage alone that gives any credence to the beating being race-related.

"Seats taken"

Anyways, thats the amazing thing about the news, they dont show the entire picture. I didnt watch the video, but the kid getting beat up could have beaten up the other kids sister the same day.

If the roles were reversed and that was one black kid getting beat by a bus full of white kids. This would be on all channels and Al Sharpton would be preaching racism.

Lets see how this plays out.

Teens would not have camera phones and Internet access if it was not provided for them.

Questionable and irrelevent. Assessing (shifting) blame does not change the cultural resultant.

David, it hasn't changed how kids are or act, its just given them a new outlet or a new way to achieve their goals, good and bad.

Kids got in fights before, kids staged fights before, kids have tried to steal otheres boyfriends or girlfriends, and many more things.

I think David is right on. The "instant gratification" definitely drives some of these people to do things that they may have not done in the past. Staging a fight so a few kids on the street can view is one thing, staging a fight with the specific intent on posting it for countless people to see is indeed different. "Shock Value" doesn't last long in this age. Maybe me being 48 has a lot to do with our perception? My kids are not phased by stuff that would have made a Sailor gasp at one time.

How is it different? They're doing it for the attention both ways. Youtube just gives them a bigger audience.

Seems pretty cut and dry to me. I guess we'll just disagree on the subject.

True, children have always fought and pilfered "steadies", however the worldwide stage of the net has changed its level of acceptance and the damage done. The intent may be the same but the new tools change the landscape. This new environment has altered its dwellers

Like Leatherneck, there are moments I feel out of touch, however it is the perspective of witnessing generations of change. It is not just the kids, but the parental indifference as well.

Humans come from a very violent past, David, and the youths have always had their role in that. Expect things to wax and wane as new elements are added in and people adjust.

I remember when I was in the 7th grade it was about gangs. The kids at school wanted to emulate the gangs of the big cities. They were always fighting with one another, individually and in groups. I think that is the main reason we moved to Montana. That's what parents have to do, they have to take action.

I don't understand why a youth needs a camera phone in the first place. But if they are using it inappropriately then the clear response, of the parent, should be to take it away. And failure to do so is on the parent, not the camera phone.

Also, while I believe this issue is being hyped, if it becomes too problematic and people do not respond to correct it, then the government will. Of course I think we already know how responsive people can be on these type of things. Even if the mass does see it as a problem, that needs to be fixed, the majority won't lift a finger. Then when the government steps in with new laws, laws that will undoubtedly diminish our freedom, they'll complain about it and find something/someone to blame for that as well, other then themselves of course.

Since we are on the topic of youth violence I thought I would recommend reading A Clockwork Orange, by Anthony Burgess. It is very relevant to this topic and is a very well written book.

I just love that book and this topic got me thinking about it, IMO, it is a book that will go down as a classic.

Jeremy,

The roots of humankind and our proclivities are well enough understood. Societal and scientific innovations have made drastic changes in our ways of living and our value systems.

As for camera cell phones, please review the offering of Verizon Wireless. Take note the number of non-camera phones. Our present culture would have parents loathe to take away their teen's phone, but yes it happens, after the damage was done. The "picture passing" has occured three times in local high schools, where the police had to be involved. I would imagine it an issue elsewhere.

As for the gang emulation, your parents had an escape. The internet has reduced the wholesome landing areas. Callousness has grown in our present culture. I am not blaming games or television, but the impersonality of our internet society.

Indeed I have read A Clockwork Orange. A Brave New World might be another one for you to enjoy.
