Bought a new laptop today, worked great until Windows Update broke the scroll feature on my touchpad. 2 hours of tech support only to find out I had to do a complete recovery. Once restored I was instructed to disable the Update service, which I have done. I guess I'll be doing updates via Windows Download and HP updater.

One interesting thing, the tech guy I was talking to said that in a few months Vista will be pulled from the market and Vista users will get free upgrades to Windows 7. I had heard about some people possibly getting free up grades but I didn't think that would start until next year.

I hold off on input device drivers (such as touchpad) on laptops, I've seen the Windows drivers from Microsoft updates mess things up....instead getting those from the manufacturers website.

And there's nothing officially in writing from MS re a free upgrade to Windows 7 for Vista users either. Vista won't be pulled from the market either.

Yeah watch those touch pad drivers from MS..they have known issues as I've said on one thread with instructions on how to fix a certain issue.

From what I've been reading even if its not official they will have a upgrade program and most likely around the time mentioned of June/July time tables.

And it would be in their best interest for computer builders to not continue to install Vista once Win7 is released.. Vista is trash compared to even the beta of Win7 IMO and the opinion of many many others that have tested it.

Yes Burke..and the sun is larger than the moon.

Vista was the introduction of a lot of new features, and can be a bit slower than XP. Windows 7 is a more fine tuned version of these features and has a couple new ones, as well as being on par with XP speeds.

In the Sava Realm this translates to Vista is trash and Windows 7 is godly.

I sure wouldn't count on anything free from MS. Vista is definately here to stay.

The lesson is never let Windows install drivers for you, no matter how much you don't want to mess with things.

Much like Windows 98 (which was almost OK)..and Windows 98SE...which was pretty good...we have Vista, and Vista SE..oops..I mean...Windows 7.

One of the most annoying flaws I found with Vista was no full repair option like XP had..there are times when its really needed otherwise you end up having to reload the whole thing from scratch. I'm not sure if they added that back in with Win7 or not.

I use Vista at work and at home, both Quad Cores and it rocks.

As for having to do a complete recovery. Why not boot off the DVD and run a repair? Vista's repair options are feature rich and should've allowed you to go back to before that driver/hotfix update.

You can control what Win Update installs. You don't have to install the drivers it suggests.

I know, it is just that I have never had a problem with Windows update previously that except for a sound driver, and that was easily remedied by uninstalling the driver and reinstalling the old one. That didn't work in this case. Neither did restoring the machine to it's initial boot.

Vista screws the pouch on my daughters laptop everytime she has it set to auto. Just rollback the drivers, works everytime.

Win 7....wow, that was fast I expected the Vista name to hang around awhile longer.

It's going to be too expensive anyways, I'll just stick with XP.

Seemed fast to me. I mean from your little chart the XP name hung around for 5 some years. That makes the one year for the Vista name comparatively short.

I'll keep that touchpad driver in mind.. I just got a new laptop myself.

Same price, and better for me: Smaller and lighter than the 17" I currently have, better processor, faster FSB, faster RAM, and twice the video memory. The current laptop has 500GB drive and a Blu-Ray ROM, but I have a PS3 so that isn't an issue for me.
