New modem.

Hi guys. Im curious to know what the best modem is to buy. i currently have a arris tm502g and no longer want to rent it from my ISP. I play alot of games and have a small wireless network setup for a laptop. Thanks.

Those Arris models are fine, it's an MTA, for the combo internet/digital voice service. I had one where I lived before with Comcast..with their powerboost..VERY fast and stable modem, tons of online gaming on it.

You need to contact your ISP as some models won't work with certain systems. However if it doesn't matter then I suggest the Motorola SB5120.... by far the best modem I've ever used for cable.

The Arris TM502G is a VOIP modem, so a SB5120 wouldn't work for that.

right..but if he doesn't require VOIP then it wouldn't matter which I'm not sure he's using that. Being just a standard modem I think the SB5120 is best.

Comcast only installs them on homes using VOIP, if not they usually provide RCAs.

Comcast also provides the SB5101 and the SB5120... the 5101 is junk. At least they provide those around here.

My favorite plain cable modem is also the MB SB 5120....I have several of them and always use them when I can. But when I upgraded my cable internet to the triple play package at home, due to the VoIP, I had to get the Arris MTA. It performed just as solidly as the 5120....and I pushed it hard, many PCs online gaming at the same time, keeping up with PowerBoost speeds without a hiccup.
I've never seen an ISP ship/install an expensive MTA to a basic cable customer...so when I saw him mention the Arris..I'm assuming he has the VoIP package.
