I know this doesn't normally just roll off the tongue but I am liking the new '09 Symantec AV product...seems to run as light as nod32 (about 6-8mb of ram). I haven't had a chance to throw a lot at it yet but it does not seem to be that 'PC hogging' garbage it once was. Maybe Symantec finally listened to what everyone was saying about their products and have made strides to improve.

That is interesting because in the latest AV Comparatives the new Norton does very vell, coming in higher than Kaspersky and NOD32.

Avast seems to have improved its detection rate, although its scanning speed is still slower and now it has more false positives.

The next Retrospective/Proactive test should be interesting.

I'd still never use Norton... still the worse product AV I've ever seen in recent years and has tainted my view on them. As for Avast they seem to test Pro more than Home and even the home version being free is 10x better than anything norton can throw out. As for scanning speed.. well a few more mins and still removing anything I've seen thus far these last 2 years is more than enough for me.

Well, your tainted view aside, the new Norton outscored Avast, so I don't know where you get that Avast is 10x better.

AV products can change, Avast is a good example, it was really good once, then went down hill, and now looks to be back on its way up a little.

The new one I'll have to see, but I'm convinced looking at 10+ systems a day that Avast has better detection rate and I've been trying various free stuff just to see for myself.

If I recommend free I say Avast, if I recommend paid..I say NOD32 but to be honest the Avast home even matches the paid version of nod32 here lately.

But it doesnt, though its close to to the new norton Avira is still sitting at the top spot of AV Comparatives.

If Avast keeps up its new marks on their review though it will certainly hold its own.

AV comparatives or whatever site can say what they want..but I've seen different... I matched up Avira against Avast both fully updated two weeks ago and Avira missed 3 or 5 different detections vs Avast picking them up which were not false positives.

At that point I would have paid for it as it did the job and then some.

And this is the point were I ask how do you have Avira set up?

I installed Norton AntiVirus 2009 on my Windows XP (SP3) machine. I had previously set ZoneAlarm Pro so it would not load at start-up, to assure that it would not interfere with the installation of NA 2009.

They have been doing much better in detection rates for over a year now, and their new 2009

The jury is still out on how small the program itself actually is, and if it will cleanly uninstall if you run into troubles. The last several years, it had gotten so bloated, took forever and another hundred years to uninstall.

I haven't seen it yet in person I imagine I'll stumble across it soon on someones PC. I won't be reselling it, but if it's good, it'll be good to see it do better, as it comes OEM'd on so many new PCs, it'll be good to see home users finally have a decent AV product on their new computers out of the box.

I've read very good user reviews of it but Norton has always been one of the best in detection tests...... in real life it's a different story. Most of the computers I remove malware from have Norton installed, so until I see it work in the "real world" I would not recommend it.

I am giving it a run on my personal pc...My pc is not the best to run a full test on, because I know how to surf and could actually get by without it for the most part, but I want to see how it interacts and I will hook up a hard drive from an infected pc once in a while.

and as far as system usage, the one highlighted is all that runs for the program.

What if you show processes from all users? I recognize that specific service, but prior versions used to run about 4-5 other ones too.

Hmmm.... I have to look back through here.

I had a client yesterday that insisted on keeping Norton, they had 144 days left on their subscription. So I updated them to NIS 2009, I have to say it is very light and very configurable and installed in about 30 seconds, can't say anything about it's detection rate but it is a class above the older versions.
