Beef up the RAM. It's still quite slow with only 1 gig, 2 gigs is tolerable, 4 gigs gets it moving better.
64 bit is right...easy install.

I went with three gigs for ram and 3 something ghz for the processor. Just got the Dell late today, will unbox and go at it tomorrow morning.

PS - I'm sure there is a way to turn off the visual features and just go classic like XP, right?

Not as quick to get to as in XP (nor are most things...Vista makes you drill several layers deeper to get to most functionality

) but yeah the Classic theme is there.
However....if you have a good graphics card, letting it run Aero on some PCs is reported to actually run faster than running classic theme...because Aero is fully offloaded to the GPU, whereas classic theme takes "some" CPU power.

I works and works well, but there is no getting around it being slower with apps than XP.

Well, here we go. I can't open the control panel. I click on the shortcut and it opens for like 5 seconds and closes.

Latest:
Wiped out the HD with Fdisk and did a clean install. I only installed the network driver. Figuring I could go to the Dell site for the other drivers.
That's it for now on this.

How good is system restore on this? I had to do a restore to early this morning, but I have a strange sense it is still picking up the intel chipset drivers that have caused me the latest grief.

I'm sure nobody cares, but I did finally get this up and running.
Unfortunately, the people that were supposed to clone this "had no clue" what to do so I had to do 24 seperate installs.

ugh create your install cd with the quickness... 24 separate installs... I WOULD be insane! Or at least hire me within your department, and I will gladly create multiple install disks for use! :P
Good luck with Vista *ick*

It was rough.... I'm sure there are some things missing from the machines, but oh well. I'm running out of time.
I still have one more possibly two to finsh. At least I have 22 others I can base it off of now.

Norton Ghost 11.5 ftmfw! Worked perfectly on the last install. Wish it would have been discovered sooner.
