I don't know much about NICS, but it sounds to me like it is your service providers problem. If the IP is changing on you then I assume it is them.

Yeah, that's not a bad NIC. The 169 IP is indicates that you didn't pull an IP from your provider, for whatever reason. If the DHCP server is down, for troubleshooting purposes, try configuring the TCP/IP stack statically.

Signs of a bad nic?

I've noticed a few times recently when I boot my machine that I am picking up the 169.254.x.x address instead of my usual ip address.

Release and Renew didn't fix the problem, but shutting down the pc and rebooting the cable modem did.

Everything looks fine in device manager. Just wondering if the nic is starting to go bad or if the cable modem is going south as well.

Nic is a Kingston Fast EtherRx PCI 10/100TX.

Cable Modem is a RCA DCM215

Thanks

I have that problem sometimes. Usually I can reset the cable modem, then reboot computer, and I will get an IP. Other times, there is a problem on the ISP end, so I just have to wait for them to fix it. I also have a weak RX signal at the modem. The cable company told me that they would replace ALL cableing from the pole to my house, (which they did), but I actually got a weaker signal after they did that. They are now in the process of finding the problem between the pole and the head end.

When you have that problem again, Run Winipcfg, hit release, then renew, but watch the send light on your modem. If it does not light up, then you may need to remove your TCP/IP protocol and then reinstall it. I have had to do that a few times. For some reason my computer would not communicate with the cable modem??

If the light does come on, then the problem is probably with the ISP.
