Your modem..you usually get from your ISP.
A router...yes...always good to hide your PC behind a NAT firewall. I will not support a computer that's not behind a router.
What kind? I know is Australia...you have a few rather unique ISP's...need to get a router that supports their type of service..maybe want to check with your ISP first.
Also note that many ISPs are now shipping modems that are actually combination modem/routers....or gateway appliances. So they may already supply you with a device that provides NAT for you.

I think you will be really happy with a fresh system to run broadband on.. I'd suggest cleaning up the computer real good or better yet a fresh install of windows or whatever then install the tweaks and programs you want plus spyware removal such as Spybot S&D and a good anti virus.
