Anyone know where the "system file checker" went to in W/ME ?

If you have the ole Win98 CD lyin around you can extract SFC from there. You will need 2 files in order for it to run correctly.


SFC.exe can be found in the Win98_46 CAB file and SFCDLL.DLL can be found in the Win98_41 CAB file.


Just extract these 2 files to your Windows System folder and you will be able to run System File Checker. Hope this helps.

It does not look as if it works to well wothin WinME. I tried it a few weeks ago and it didn't look as if it did a thorough scan of my HD. Give it a shot anyways, maybe it'll work for you.

SGC is gone because there is pchealth and state manager. With these two running ME's system files cannot be altered or deleted. Try this...delete any of the windows core files then watch them reappear.

I see, a little "Failsafe" for folks who like to go in and change things. I also see a downfall with that.

So, if you do get some corrupted files (and we all know Windows is famous for that) you have to extract them from the CD if you can find them or reinstall.

I know there is a "return to a past date" option but I have heard that deletes everything added after that point. So if you go to far back might as well start from scratch.

Am I on the right track here?

I already knew that, but SFC was just so cool and I was hoping to see if it would work. Too bad it didn't .

No actually restore will leave all data files on the HD, things like text doc's, jpeg's and the like. At least so bill gates says...but who beleves him anyways. You know what I'm gonna test his system. I will do a restore cause I don't care if I trash my ole ladies system (I use the 2k pro box) and add some text and graphics files and see if it delete's them. Let you know what happens shortly.

I just tested it and it does what it says. It left all the doc files and some graphics files in place without touching them.

Actually, no.

In Milly, there is a folder C:\Windows\Options\Restore (and it is very misleading since you don't have many options)
that is about 153MB! It has all of the setup
and .cab files that PCHealth, System File Protection, System Restore - they are all somewhat linked, as far as I can tell, yet somewhat distinct - will use to restore your corrupted files. So, it's actually worked for me.

I also use system file checker, in the way
previously described in this thread, to just
basically "log" what an install has done to
my computer. You just have to configure it to check C:\Windows -- include subdirectories = yes -- then for file types
just enter (you can see this one coming down
the pipe) *.* and you get what you are hopefully looking for.

Just don't try to extract and "corrupted" files using Win98/98SE SFC. You do that from
System Info -- ie. msinfo.exe -- instead.

I'm surprised to say it, but reboots cure a
lot of problems in Milly.

Just don't get me started on compatibility,
or rushing code out by a given date.....
