I have a very annoying prob w/Winblows98 SE
sometimes it tells me it ran out of memory, which is impossible b/c I have 320MB Ram also on a few occasions I had Memturbo running and it told me something like 140+ RAM free...
wtf is that all about and how can I fix it.
I never really had that prob b4 when I ONLY had 128MB Ram

windows9x is plagued w/ memory leaks.. try shutting down one or so of your startup programs to figure out which is doing it..also if you open and close the same applications over and over, the memory is sometimes not released which'll cause that..a nice reboot every 4 or so hours will help.

Amro amout covers it, need that reboot with RAM prob. Should also do full Optimization of system [see 'speedguide.net' link at bottom of page] if you haven't already.

Keep Startup progs to bare minimum.

I had 98se for a while but didn't like it at all. Went back to 98 for a very long time b4 going to ME.

If you need Networking, consider ME or 2k. [at least in foreseeable future]

If not, consider going to 98 if you don't want to upgrade your OS.

Or, can wait for next release of MS bugware.

There are MANY TSR programs out there. (Terminate & Stay Resident) These appps leak memory too and rob resources. Here's a small listing -

There are many others too. Some that you would not expect either. paint Shop Pro, Norton stuff. Outlook Express, MS Office apps, etc, all will stay resident after closing the programs. They won't be listed in task manager either!

i use win98 SE and seen a vbs script that i use now when i close alot of programs out to make sure memory is released.

open notepad and add the line
FreeMem = Space(80000000)
save to the desktop as freemem.vbs

when i close alot of apps or ressources are high for what is running i double click and it frees 80MB or ram. no more do i get the out of memory error shouldn't make it for more then half of what u have in ram so if you have 128MB or ram it should be no more then freemem = (65000000)
i have 256MB and only free up 80MB at a time and it seems to work good.

your best bet that might help is to get rid of the memturbo.and either set up your virtual memory your self. Plus shut down progies you don't use. Another program I found to work real good is cachman 3.80.500. In this program you can set your memory up your self or let it do it for you. I use it and it works great. Plus it a lot less easier then messing with your virtual memory. I use memturbo for a while and kept getting low memory errors. So I dump this and tried it. Have been running fine sense then. I used to use one of those memory manager programs, but they really arent designed for people with enough memory. They work great if you've got 64megs or 96 megs of ram. If you have 128 or above, they are only going to cause problems. I personally let windows handle all of my memory and limit my startup. In fact, the only things I have running in the background when I boot up are zone alarm and nortons. I tried the inaritcli(SP?) anti virus, but it didnt save me anything on system resources. In fact, I didnt like it needed my email address and I had to enter codes whenever I wanted updates. Norton's and that freeware antivirus used the same amount of sys resources. I'm only running an amd550 with 256megs of ram and i can easily have seven hotline clients open, word2000, ie5.5, AIM and be watching a divx movie. The divx movie isnt full screen obviously, but I still dont feel sluggish. Clean your startup.

I've had my computer running without a reboot for over a week and I'm running win98se.

Is this a VIRTUAL MEMORY Issue or does the warning pop up and say that you are out of physical RAM?
There is a big difference.
If it is virtual, you can change your virt mem settings to avoid the warnings all together. If it is a physical memory problem, you are going to have to find the leak.

Since it is possible to turn off virtual memory, I would have to think it's also impossible to run out of virtual memory. First, turn off memory manager and then let us know what you're running.

Oh it's possible. Trust me. My PC at work is constanly running low on virt RAM. They have the cache set at like 39M on a PC that has 128-256M RAM. You CAN turn it off, but it's not advised.

Try running a freeware program called FreeRAM XP Pro 1.52 which continually posts the amount of RAM free (e.g. 53) at the bottom right of the screen and which when you right click on that amount allows you to AutoFree Now or Try to free a smaller amount of MB of RAM. When it displays 0 that means you're running on virtual memory. Every few minutes it attempts to free as much memory as it can (AutoFree) while running in the background. This program works very well on Win98SE.

Another freeware program KernalEx-4.5.2 allows programs written for WinXP to run on Win98. It is surprising that many people still have DOS programs and or .TXT files that they wish to run/view on Win98SE.

Are you kidding me? Get real.

For that matter, Firefox 3.6.28, ClamWin 0.98.1 and Clam Sentinel, Diskeeper Lite and OpenOffice Writer 2.4 all work well on Win98SE with 320MB RAM.

Extend the memory ram of your pc to add more files on your desktop or you can also buy 64 bit ram on your pc.
