So I bought this Linksys Wireless G ADSL gateway router thingy...

I've gotten as far as sticking all the wires in the right holes, and I'm reading the step-by-step guide. I've stuck the disc in. I've gone through all the options. I've done everything it says I need to do, and yet when it comes to testing the internet connection (the same one I'm using at this very moment with my bog-standard-yet-surprisingly-more-reliable-than-this-bloody-router modem) it says there's a problem connecting.

Can anyone help me please? Bare in mind that I'm completely useless when it comes to abbreviations, definitions, and anything else related to actually making a wireless router work.

Find out if they need you to register your MAC address with them, and if so, either call them up and register the MAC of your Linksys gateway, or clone the MAC address of your computer onto the Linksys.

What's a MAC address?

I have absolutely no idea what to do unless it's laid out step-by-step for me. Funnily enough, the step-by-step guide is pretty useless in this case.

Well, first call your internet provider. If they say they don't register your MAC address, you don't need to worry about it. MAC = media access control, basically your network interface connection's (NIC's) SSN, so that different devices on the network can tell them apart. IP addresses can be set manually, and can be duplicated, MAC addresses are programmed by the manufacturer, and are all unique. To see your NIC's MAC, go to start, run, type cmd, then type: ipconfig /all. It will be listed as the physical address. To see your gateway's MAC, log in and probably go to the status page. To clone the MAC, under the setup page, go to MAC Address Clone. The menus may be slightly different, since you have a different model than I do, but it should be something similar. Enable MAC cloning, and then click to have it clone your PC's MAC, or you can hand type it. All cloning will do is make the gateway look as if it has the same MAC as the NIC.

First...who is your ISP? If you have DSL, it's most likely not related to MAC registration, most DSL ISPs (in the US here) don't deal with MAC registration, it's only a few cable ISPs that do..and it's less and less common lately.

What existing equipment do you have from your ISP? It's all a guessing game until we know 100% what equip you have, and who your ISP is..meaning..what they use for authentication. Most likely it's PPPoE.

The ISP is TalkTalk. I have what I'm assuming is a bog-standard modem to connect to the net (which I'm using now).

Is there some sort of make/model on this modem? Curious if it's just a pure bridged modem, or a gateway appliance already doing NAT and possibly PPPoE. This is a "must-know" (and if your ISP requires PPPoE) before trying to add another device.

It's a Talk Talk modem. Not a clue. Look like it's made by Sagem.

Done, and yet when I open IE, I get the bog-standard "page cannot be found" thing.

Any ideas?

Apparently, TalkTalk has a particular issue within its network with many users having the same complaint about not able to connect to interactive webpages.

Here are links where this issue has been discussed and an apparent solution found - set MTU to 1400.

Again, done it. Nothing. I applied, I rebooted, I waited till my computer found the network, I clicked internet explorer and zilch.

Can you display websites of Yahoo and Hotmail? Can you log into your web-based email? Can you use instant messengers of Yahoo, MSN or ICQ?

Nope. None to all of that.

I took the thing back and got myself a refund : P
