I just saw that tickets for the King Tut exhibit at the Field Museum in Chicago go on sale Jan. 24...lots of new artifacts that weren't at the last exhibit in 1977.
waited in line 6 hours in 1977. was awesome then, can't wait to see it this time.
has anyone seen the new exhibit elsewhere?

Cool, I visited Egypt with my family in December 2004 and we went to the museum and saw a lot of the stuff. It was an awesome experience.

I have seen something similar about a Polish King's tomb...the "curse' killed the entire first team of researchers...turned out that astragalus, wheat, and other plants (i'm going to google this in a second) were left there deliberately to deteriorate...a time bomb for anyone disturbing the tomb...the scientists were killed by the airborne particles. saw it on Discovery prolly 10 years ago...
I don't think anyone will suffer harm from the exhibit though...

I believe this is it, although it doesn't seem quite as what I recall.

It was really impressive in 1977, should be even more awesome this time with the new pieces.
...and I'm honored to have your presence here in my thread Philip!

I'd love to see it again. I seen it in 1977 and I wish I had time then to do one more tour.
Too far away this time.

That would be soooo fascinating! I am wondering here...are or would cameras and pics taken be allowed? If so ghettoside, maybe you could take some shots and share them here with us at speedguide? That would be awesome!!

I was thinking about that earlier when DH posted.
I was only 17 last time it was around in '77...I'm not sure but I think there were some kind of restrictions on cameras in the exhibit...
I'll poke around the Field's site and see if there's any info...can always send them an email to find out too.

It's pretty rare when any major museum will let you take pictures of the exibits.

yes DH, I'm sure pics were not allowed in '77, other times I go to the Field and Museuem of Science & Industry, Adler...never even think of taking pics.
I tried to find info on pics on the Field site...no luck, so I've been googling...
found some cool stuff...
here's the
US schedule for Tut
this is the best
Egyptian pic site I've ever seen...each thumb (anyways the areas I've looked at so far) opens to a 600 x 450, then click again and 1600 x 1200. and great quality...best photos of Karnak I've ever seen...I've only just found this site and am peeping it now.

It's about a 9 hour drive

I'm probably gonna make the trip in the fall. Hopefully the lines will be shorter

the Egyptians are really strict about taking pics of their stuff...
I tried finding info on pics at thye exhibit but was unsuccessful. Tried a call to the museum, ended up on hold...and finally hung up. Not my day today.
sent an email.
Maybe someone who's been to it this time knows if pics are allowed in the exhibit.

Two popular reason are
1) The light from the flash can cause environmental harm over time to artifacts
2) Copyright of artifacts...professionals tend to use tripods, may publish their pics as art.

I thought I'd heard that - about the flash damaging the artifacts, but couldn't find it in several googles.
Copyright, yup.
In Egpyt, you aren't allowed pics in any tomb. And most anywhere else there (exhibit related etc...), they charge a hefty fee to snap a few pics. If video is allowed, big $.
Outside though, pretty much n/p, except I saw a notation that you're supposed to ask permission before taking a pic of any Egyptian person.
I wonder what that's about.

Sure, I can see that but they speakers mounted in the place echoing all through the place .... would a flash ...chit they wouldn't even allow no light video...or sound do more damage to a building that age ?

We're not talking teh Sistine Chapel or anything ... I mean i can understand constant light barrages against the Mona Lisa ... but inside a building with nothing hanging on the walls?????

What tunes you cranking up? At the volume Downhill normally listens at?
The environmental "wear 'n tear" from the light from flash being more towards fading and degradation of color I believe.
So I've read and heard about anyways. But yeah..some places, such as old stucco building...I can't picture cameras destroying it like a laser beam either. //shrug

Hey Gettoside,
I saw the exhibit too in 1977 in Chicago. I lived in the Quad Cities (Iowa/Illinios border) back then. I think we stood in line a good three hours. I thought it was really neat (of course I was only 7 years old!)

Asked my brother, he said they didn't allow any type of photography or videotaping.
