I had said something about this topic before. Theres something fishy about why they really care wether or not the OS is being used by PC users. Die-hard Mac users will still want the look and feel of a MAC, while someone who want away from Microsoft will still want the PC Look and Feel but have a MAC OS. Seems to me that they would make a killing selling standalone Operating systems without the support and warranties of a system as well. I think theres more to this than meets the eye. I wouldnt be surprised if MS and APPLE had some kind of behind-the-scenes agreement.

Well, I'm not so sure about an "agreement" between the two. Yes, Apple could make a killing selling their OS, and now since their systems too will be x86 based they could do so much more to attract developers and be able to support so much more software. They would actually be a viable Windows competitor. However they have to make the decission whether or not to continue selling the Mac "image" of one all encompassing solution to everything computer related. They would greatly lose the profits they make on their extremely marked up hardware. Ultimately it will come down to which route will yeild more profit.

At this time it's very difficult to see whether Apple's current customer base will realize the now subtle differences between the actual workings of PCs and Macs.

In my opinion Apple needs to realize that they will never dethrown PCs (they've been trying for just under 30 years now) and stop fighting against them, but integrate their technologies with the others that exist. They need to tear down this wall they have always kept between their technology and the rest of the computer related world. I think they would be able to do very well in specialty sectors such as newer MP3 players, and more compatible software. Even to go so far as selling their computers (primarily laptops and MiniMacs or iMacs) without any protection chips. Allowing them to run Windows, Linux or the new mac OS (which they should market individually, as Pie stated). I'd like to see an Apple that is finally ready to play well with others within the industry.

Well this is their chance to get their foot in the door. I don't see them as taking it. If this OS runs as good as they say it does, then they could take a nice hunk of the OS market from MS. People are dissatisfied with MS's stranglehold on the GUI based marketplace, and their OS isn't as heavily flawed as MS in this point in time. There are also a lot less virii if any at all.
Microsoft hold several patents over Apples head. One of the bigger ones being IPOD. It seems that someone over at Apple screwed up and didn't register IPOD's menuing system with the Patent Office and MS did.

mac OS going retail for PC's was in the wsj the other day. although jobs says it'll never happen, he also said the same thing about going intel.

who knows? it'll be a good ride either way.
