how late should a 12 year old be able to stay out?

Post by Dan »

I know what we do as parents,

but I just wanted some other opinions,

my son is 12,he gets decent grades,

considering his homework is already done,

( school nights are sun - thurs nights,)

what is a fair time to let him stay over at his friends house or out with his friends in the neighborhood riding bikes or playing basketball, etc, etc.

on a school night?

12? I'd say 9 if he's doin well and has his head on straight. If you start noticing weird patterns or behavior, better make it 8, before the sun goes down just in case. 12 is still pretty young but these days bad habits can start alot earlier.

I used to have to be home when the street lights came on. During the summer, the days are longer and no school, so I could stay out later. During the Winter/Fall, days are shorter and had school, so I had to get in earlier.

I forget what age that rule didn't apply anymore, But when the street lights came on, there was no excuse for not having a watch or clock nearby when I was outside.

Of course, I always pushed that rule a bit by coming home late. :D

I'd say streetlights on=home too. Whatever you tell him, he'll complain it's too early :D

Hi Dan

I was brought up with The Streetlights & brought my Kids up with the same Rules. Most of the Parents on the block went by those Rules and when the lights came on all you saw were asses heading Home. We didn't fight it as we knew our weekends would then be in jeopardy.

On some occasions if they asked to stay at a friends for whatever reason this was okay-ed by the Parents of the kid in question and an extra hour or 2 was permitted. During the week this was rare. Weekends generally where the rule their.

Good advice so far, I'd agree the 8-9 range seems pretty realistic.

I like the street light idea,

right now for him,if his homework is done,it's 8pm. :)

(fri & sat nights are different,it's later, also depends on what he's doing,)

but keep any ideas coming.

I'd say 9:00 P.M. and a bit later if he's doing something constructive. But I remember being 12 and I can't think of a single thing I did that would be considered constructive.

When I was his age I'd be out until about 9 and during the summer holidays about 11. That was then though. Back then we also kept our doors unlocked and were fairly safe to roam as we pleased.

I'd give him a 9:30. Provided he has a drive home.

Until I was 17 and was able to drive my car, I was home by sundown, fed and in bed by 8pm and 9pm Friday & Saturday nights unless there was something special on.
Nothing wrong with those times but it was tough.

When it got dark was our rule, lived in the country.
When I was about 7 they installed a street light up at the corner, became our favorite place to play.
First night it was there, whooly poop, it never got dark, how cool :)

and on fri/sat nights,it's later, more like 10 or 10:30 ,as long as we know where he's at,

*like was said, the world is different these days* :(
