Anyone else having fun with their dvd burners?

I just got one couple weeks ago (settop, not computer, ive had the computer burner for awhile) its alot easier than the computer setup and the quality is actually amazingly good. I got the Liteon LVW-5005 (here). It seems to work very well, its got a cooling fan in the back too which I found a very good idea as ive seen most DVD player/burner settops normally never had, but definately need. I might actually pop it open and swap the fan for a faster one who knows haha. Anyway, I love digital mpeg video, and im very happy I was able to copy all my old vhs tapes from like 20yrs ago which are starting to go bad (as you know, vhs recordings dont last). DVD's will do alot longer im thinkin, plus whatever technology comes out after that anyway

I rip alll my vhs thru comp dvd burner, but if it was really cheap it would be worth it maybe? how many hours? can you do dual layer?

My wife was kinda bugging me about getting one of those. Same reason, copy tape to dvd.

What's the general cost? How much work/time to copy VHS?

I'm big on Liteon, actually just picked up the SOHW 1633S D/L today to replace the 4X I had.

Wee... I just got done transfering almost 3 hours of video from 8mm to my PC. I sent the 8mm reels to http://www.homemoviedepot.com and they sent me the MiniDV's. I captured them all via Premiere and then burnt them to DVD via Encore DVD using menus and all that fun stuff. They turned out great! Then, I bought a CD labeler and some DVD cases and made some custom labels and cover inserts.

They were presented to my parents and my wife's parents for Christmas. They loved them!!

I am a little confused by their pricing calculator. Any ideas how much it would cost to have them convert a VHS to DVD?

Basically you input how much film you have (Step 1) and then what you want it transfered to (Step 2). Step 3 is your estimated cost.

I do NOT see an option for converting VHS yet. They have it on their website, but it says "coming soon" with cassettes when you get to the calculator.

I paid like 150 for the burner itself, and the media it all depends. I just found some DVD+R's at Rite Aid that were normally 11.99 for a 5 pack, but either they messed up or are truely on sale for 3.99 a 5 pack. I gotta go back tommarrow and buy more, cuz the tag had said on sale for 8.99 but they rang up for 3.99, get em before they realize they messed up I say!

My imaginary DVD burner does all sorts of fun and wonderful things. The other day when we were at lunch it even paid the bill and got us seated right away in the VIP lounge.

really not that hard to do if you have a capture card and some software, i have done a whole bunch for my family.

Zooner and Jim have helped me figure out a bunch of video stuff

I guess I got mine because id prefer having something that can do it itself rather than use my computer when I want to use it for other things at the time (like games, etc) its alot more convenient than the computer. Its quality is unbelieveable too.

I treid doing the DVD to VHS transfer thing a while ago, but i could never capture a quality constant feed. I tried using the already connected TV feed coming in. Also my DVD recorder sucks and couldn't get the DVD players to read them...

Its not a good enough capture source to really get the quality your needing I think. Ive got a capture card myself as well which works quite well but again isnt nearly as good as this settop dvd burner, which at HQ makes a 9.5mbps MPEG2 vid stream and 1.4mbps CD audio stream, its basically an exact copy digitally, you dont see any artifacts or pixelling at all. Even running at SP (5.1mbps) I dont get any distortion, although when you go much lower than that you can tell (quality does dip at SLP mode, gets blurry and blocky, SLP runs at 1.7mbps video).

There are really good computer capture cards to do this, but the cost is basically more than a settop plus your not adding the burner itself, I consider the settop a much better choice for this type of thing. Its definately been better for me, MUCH easier, and free's the computer entirely instead of inhaling it.
