help with cablenut

Post by tothing »

Mono or other expert here help me set my new isp with cablenut . Im on win XP, and my isp advertised up and down are = 64,384 kbps...
here is the tcp/ip analyzer result

TCP properties for IP = XXXXXXXX.201 ()
Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)
Notes: Read the Analyzer FAQ if the above is not your IP address.

TCP options string = 0204059801010402
MTU = 1472
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.
MSS = 1432
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 17184
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 17184

RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
504064 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
252032 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
126016 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
63008 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 687.36 kbps (85.92 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 274.944 kbps (34.368 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 243 hops

TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000

THANKS :D :D :rotfl: :rotfl:

Try thease in the sg optmizer below me to download and install also you take another analyzer like you did above after you applied changes and rebooted you need to get that mtu to 1500

select - cable
check - custom settings
network adapter selection -
check modify all adapters
maxmtu -1500
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window 17520
MTU Discovery - yes
Black Hole Detect - no
Selective Acks - yes
Max Dup ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 windows scailing is checked

Other Settings tab:

Max Connections per Server - 10
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 20
Lan Browsing Speedup - optimized

Then select "Apply Changes" and reboot to take effect.

1. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need.

2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections -

LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.

3. ALWAYS connect your modem via ethernet (NIC) and make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it is ISP dependent unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL (the instructions are in my Help & Tips link). If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.

4. Clear your temporary internet files.

5. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 15 seconds.

6. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot 1.2 http://beam.to/spybotsd & Ad Aware 6.0 http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download to remove any spyware then install and update SpywareBlaster to stay spyware FREE. YOU MUST USE BOTH AD AWARE & SPYBOT TO ENSURE YOU ARE SPYWARE FREE SINCE ONE FINDS WHAT THE OTHER MISSES.

7. Make sure you do the faster web page tweak in Read1st link.

8. If you have Zone Alarm as a firewall uninstall it then visit Zonelabs.com for further instructions on removing it's left over junk.

9. Install Outpost Firewall http://www.agnitum.com\ or Sygate Firewall http://www.sygate.com/ , both have FREE and Pro versions and are heads above ZA.

10. Scan for viruses with your antivirus app, if you do not have one get one IMMEDIATELY, AVG 6.0 http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php is an excellent FREE AV app.

11. Make sure you have ALL of the latest Windows Updates

mm just to remind you that im on xp, and i also have this question that has been ringing in my head for 4 years. My cable advertised speed is 256 kbp/s, does that mean the speed (on file download window) should be around 256 kbp/s when i download files of internet ? files like movies, songs, game demos etc . I never seen speed on that small window reach above 40. someone please clarify about this advertised speed thing. thanks so much for your time :thumb:

TCP options string = 020405b40103030001010402
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 17520
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 17520

256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)

64240 (MSS x 44)

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 280.32 kbps (35.04 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.

You're going to have some of those hangs while playing online games, since you only have 384 megs of RAM on a Windows XP machine...you're hitting virtual memory an aweful lot.

Try Speedguides TCP Optimizer instead...and keep your eyes on that page for something new soon. ;)

Ye no mater what program he usues he is still going get lag most games as you know run in udp protocol which is a best effort delivery sorta like my spelling and grammer in most posts, the otpimizer and or cablenut those settings have nothing to do with upd traffic at all none.

edit mtu and time to live is the only two that would effect icmp traffic

He's getting onscreen lagging while playing online games. He has a PIII under 1 GHz, with 384 megs, trying to run a first person shooter game all while juggling WinXP in the background. I'll wager a whole bunch of pints of Guinness that his in-game lags are related to pagefile hits.

Now for further tweaking, was simply suggesting the TCP Optimizer (and soon to come). Not going to help his game much, I didn't say it's help his game in the first place, his game lag is hardware related (under-resourced)
