No, definitely not!

People that refuse to obey the terms they signed up under should be banned, not the threads that provoke them into such behavior.

You don't have to reply to political and religious threads.

Plain and simple.

I enjoy reading through the numerous 'good' debates on such subjects, it's just so often that things get out of hand. People that sincerly disagree with the subject, rather than replying, should just forget about it.

The same can be said that you don't have to post political threads. There usually aren't many good debate threads relating to politics or religious matters, I would venture to say more often than not they get out of hand. These threads have taken a toll on the SG community (or lack of community). We may still be one big happy family if these threads didn't pop up. It seems all they do is further divide us....

Yes. I might not have been around here long enough to have much of an input, but I came here looking for computing chat - gaming specifically. I have another forum where I get most of my technical info. Anyway, if I wanted to talk about politics and relgion then I would go to a political or religious forum. It's obvious most of you guys know each other quite well, so if you want to talk about that type of thing, you could probably do it on a private IRC channel. It leaves a bad taste in someones mouth when they come here looking for help and they see posts bashing religion or favoring one. Just my $0.02.

It doesn't make any sense to ban any sort of topic.
The TOS already addresses the problem of flaming, insulting, and rude behavior.

Next it will be 'gay threads', then 'saving the envornment' threads, and then on to the 'Intel vs AMD' threads and 'what's the best firewall' threads.

It isn't the topic that is the problem.

The problem is the lack of adherance to something called the "Terms of Service" that we all signed AND AGREED TO when we joined up.

Please quit blaming the topic of discussion when it has nothing to do with the topic.

I voted no. I dont participate in them much anymore but I still like to read them. There are alot of great minds on SG and I like reading what they think. Also all of what Norm said.

We should ban this topic all together.

DOS SUCKS

:D

Your right, it's not the topics but the people (some) that disrupt the flow.

Hi Chris

Yes!

I agree with the reasons of "Why Not to do so", however when it is all said and done, people end up Banned, Insulted, Angry and Irresponsible, for no real reason imho.

The sage old advice of never "Talk Religion or Politics" is still good advice imho. Little is every gained other than expressing ones personal views and much is lost, in intolerance and anger.

These are Personal choices and once committed to, seldom change in my experience.

We can all talk of intolerance and disrespect and people unable to act in a civilized manner etc. However the truth is Its True! So why keep subjecting ourselves to this type of thing which usually ends up with someone Banned.

We keep whittling away at the parts of this SG Community and soon there will be little worth coming back here for. I am not trying to defend anyones actions that do not align with the general Rules here, but simply to point out that no matter the Rules, these subjects are the greatest cause of dissension here, imho.

Its like Drunk Driving, you get away with it so you persist, but we all know where it leads in the end, so why keep subjecting ourselves to it?

Many times, like last night, i was watching TV and when i return i couldn't believe it.

Members challenging the Mods, others asking to be Banned and yet some Banned without having to ask. It seems to me to be happening much too often.

To me at least, if you can't stop the reactions of people then perhaps lets try to stop the cause.

I must admit i love it here and yet i find myself withdrawing as well. At times i have to force myself to click on, as i genuinely want to see the people here i have become close to and regard as Friends, yet do not want to subject myself to the constant barrage of Political and Religious posts.

I do ignore them for the most part as the outcome is never good, but at times there is little else posted. Since i have been here much has changed and i would not call these changes for the most part beneficial.

As i said a long time ago, i think of SG as the Corner Bar where you can pop in to enjoy some fun and be with not only like minded people in many cases (a sharing of a common bond) but also Friends to share a joke, or catch up on how things are going in the lives of others. A place to get away from the rough and tumble of everyday life and just have some light hearted fun, while perhaps learning a bit as a bonus.

Just my opinion for whatever its worth.

Kind of reminds me of a bad joke.

Guy goes to see his doctor about a pain in his back, when he finally gets in to see the doctor he explains that every time he bends over like this, he gets a sharp shooting pain up his back, the Doctor listens patiently while viewing the man bending over to show him, how he gets the pain.
After listening to the man and veiwing him bending, the man asked, well Doc, what do you think, is there a cure?
[punchline] The Doc replies well if you stop bending over like that you will never have the pain again.[/punchline]

[The Gong show] Goooong [/The Gong show]

I try not to delve to deep in the political or religious threads but they do take up alot of space on SG and are sometimes unavoidable.Maybe its the pending Election, or tension of the war or the way the moons allignment affects us, who knows.
But as with many, I continue to pop in here as I want to see how friends are making out, keep up to date on stuff and to relax a little, I like Minirs, Pub analogy, and the constant bashing about of the same old same old is really starting to take its Toll on SG and the community.

If stopping these threads is not an option, maybe everyone, managment and members need to step back a little and survey the damage, then come up with a plan to get back what once was.
Just little ol' me's opinion, for what its worth ;)

No. Let the Word be posted for those that want to read and get involved. If you don't want to get involved... leave it alone. Pretty simple really.
{fishing}Maybee we could have a "Religion" forum.{/fishing}

They should not be allowed to get out of hand or be primarily a cut/paste post.

Now, who will win this election???? John or George?

;)

no, they should be put into a 'debate' sub forum of the general discussion forum

In short, No.

Norm pretty much summed it up, it isn't the Topics that are the problem, its the people.

There are certain ways to say things and get your point across that are not insulting or flaming. It is all about how you act and handle yourself in these debates.

We first have to realize what the General Discussion Board is for, if you look simply at the title of this topic forum you will see it is called the General Discussion Board, here is a definition of "General" : http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=general

Now let's look up the Description that Speedguide has set for the General Discussion Board:

"General discussions pertaining to anything not covered in another forum. You may discuss life, the universe etc... Please keep them PG-13 and avoid spam."

"General discussions pertaining to anything not covered in another forum. You may discuss life, the universe etc"

The desciption and intent of the General Discussion Forum layed out by Speedguide is VERY clear.

Under that description of the general discussion forum Political and Religious threads are allowed, as long as they remain PG-13 and don't break the Terms of Service.

So claiming that this is a technical forum and Political and Religious threads have no place here is FALSE. They have a place here, but only in the General Discussion Board, not in the other forum topics.

Those kind of threads only cause a problem if people make them or let them cause a problem.

It's not the threads fault, its the peoples fault.

No. You don't have to join a thread if the subject bothers you.
It's just a sporadic thing anyway and the bulk of the political stuff will fade away next week.
