You'll get as almost as many answers as their are antivirus programs.

I love Symantecs Corporate Edition...and with 9.0, it got really good. Fantastic management features when you're running it on a network, centralized management of all your clients and servers.

My fave stand alone, and quickly growing as a fave for networks, is Esets NOD32. Very lightweight, very fast, often several automatic updates per day, and....if you look at VirusBulletin.com, it's the absolute top scorer in their ratings.

AVG I use often, good second opinion, use it on friends computers who don't have any AV or won't purchase or renew one.

Avast is another free one, however I've found it clunky.

Kapersky has gotten better in its reviews as far as scoring, but I've found it hits your system pretty hard performance wise....quite hard actually.

Eset has a free trial for NOD32, give it a try.

Even though this can be a software topic, you will get better answers on Antivirus in security, so I am sending you there...

I use Norton (Symantec) Corp anti virus on my machines. I do hope that your friend has permission and enough licenses to give you a copy as it is an expensive AV and costly if you do not have a legal license...

Since I can't say with absolute certainty which is "best", and I haven't personally analized all the code, and ref lists for every anti vi app out there (or even one of them), nor have I tested them all against every known virus(too many anti vi apps, and hundreds of thousands of viruses)
I'll take YOSC's word for it. :)

His answer is fair, and he's had a lot of hands on experience.

The one major thing I did not like about ESET... Their Tech support. I was an authorized dealer for them and they never answered my not 1 but 2 emails begging for help. To me...thats the worst thing you can do if Im their rep and they treat ME like that...what will they do to my customer.
AVG on the other hand has been a pleasure to deal with. They support me and they have helped my customers.
and for 33.90 its cheap and you get 2 years of updates and tech support.

The time I needed their support (had a problem with the mail scanner with Act2000 as a mail client), he called me back on my cell. We became a reseller about 9 months ago or so.

It's all a matter of choice and what you believe you are comfortable with. The way to do this is to opt for a free trial period, give each a month and run with your pick of them. At least then you will have had the hands-on experience with each one.

The other alternative is to use a free AV program and back it up with an online scan of choice. Panda, Symantic, Mcafee, TrendMicro are a few that offer free scans on demand.
We don't have a need to go out and buy an AV program because the network here is @ home and the greatest loss to us would be the time it would take reinstalling all the study material collected from our backup storage disks.

I'm a fan of Panda Antivirus. It's memory footprint is just under 25 megabytes on my system and there are daily updates that are easily automated. The software costs about 20 dollars and works very well.

Always liked the simpleness of AVG free. I dont know how good it is though. norton was just all over my computer. I couldnt start anything without nortons name being all over it.

Seems to be a problem with a lot of people Blebs. Luckily, I haven't been one of them so far. It just pops up, scans and stamps the messages and drops away.

What was it doing to you???

I tried Avast but found it clunky too. When I went to uninstall it, I could not (and still can't) get it out of my registry. Shows up in Services... and nothing I do can clean it out.
