New to wireless

Post by Dark_Regent »

I am thinking of hooking up my win xp and my win 98se with a wireless system. This is what i have been looking at as far as the equipment.
Wireless card
Wireless Router

Is this a fairly decent choice. And what is the ease of install and getting it configured.

Netgear is a good choice...Linksys and D-Link are other popular brands for homenetworking.

I am using the same router with a WG511 (wireless) card with no problems.

you'll love the Netgear stuff, I'm running a WRT-54G router, with off-brand (el-cheapo) network cards, aside from some card probs...not a hiccup, easy to reconfigure from time to time

translation: NetGear is :2cool: :2cool: :2cool:

watch out for D-link, I have a few of their cards, none work.
still folding away, haven't been on as much lately

Well it is up and running. With just a small amount of hair pulling and cussing on the win 98se machine. I had to disable WEP to get it to work.

I also had some trouble at first with WEP. Depending on your network card you may be able to enter the same "passphrase" that you entered at the router. However, on my MN-720 card I had to enter the actual encrypted key to get WEP to work. Took a few tries to understand the difference. Highly recommend that you use WEP...also make sure that you wait for the router to accept the changes. I got a little anxious and entered the key into my laptop before the router had "applied" the changes.

This is the card Iam useing. And I did do it like you said same pass phrase and and key I wrote it all down just to make sure. The win 98se machine just didnt seem to like it. Iam running a good firewall along with other things for security. So I am not really to worried about that part of it. It also could be something on my end. I know netgear has alot of bulletins out about that win xp sp2 update. It seems to be creating more problems than it was worth.Network card
