when the cable guy asked me whether to intall cable through the usb or the ethernet card, i asked him which was better, he replied, "they're both the same". but now that cable is running, and i'm not really getting what i expected to get, i'm having second thoughts about using the usb. so which one is better?

I would strongly recommend NIC... I had so many problems with the USB adapter (look at previous topic "USB cable modem crashes"...

Yup, the NIC gets my vote too. USB adapters take up more CPU cycles than NICs and, as IndyOST stated, have more stability/compatibility problems due to drivers.

Having over 1 year of Broadband installation experience, I can affirm that you want a NIC and not a USB.
The USB seems to have intermitten connectivity issues, not all brands and not all comps. We do have a Dell Laptop in the office that has never had a failure using USb,yet other boxes are less likely to work.
so stick with the NIC of good quality.

USB is deffinitley bad if you have other hungry USB devices in your system USB 1.0 is like a 12 MegaByte pipe that all devices share USB 2.0 is like 450 MegaBytes pipe I do service calls on cable modem in the Dallas area and often replace USB to NIC's mainly because the O/S stops liking them....they will be OK in device manager and set up in Network Neighborrhood and have good indication lights on the USB device itself but dont get out on the internet with the cable modem use a PCI NIc if ya can they have a better xfer rate within the computer

Ah, USB is 12 megaBITS per sec while USB 2.0 will be the same speed as firewire, 450 megaBITS per sec.

I have tried both ways. I prefer the NIC. Performance was about the same, but the USB seemed to disconnect at odd times.

I have had broadband for 4 years now ! Nic all the way. Call them back and see if they will switch you. Any one I ever known who used ubs complained all the time about disconnections. So be for this starts happening if possible I would try and change it. Plus it will be better on the cpu.
