hey guys, i have cox HSI, and i have their premier package, which is supposed to give me speeds of 5000/768. but all the speed tests i've down and files i've downloaded, my speeds are closer to 2900/450. can any of you guys tell me why?

Cable connections are run off a single point where many others in your neighborhood can run off as well.... if you have many on it with you then they are sucking up bandwidth also... In this case your getting ripped but nothing you can do to speed it up ..if this is the case then your best bet is to drop down to the next highest with a lower cost and you will prob end up with the same speed your getting now. You can call them and have the cable company test stuff for you but they can't garauntee any connection speeds as most state in the fine print

and i called Cox they ran, ALL their tests and tier 2 support, but still they couldn't figure out anything. they kept tellin' me i had a perfect line, and the guy (prolly lying) said he was envious that his connection wasn't that good. anyways, i'm gonna go out and get a new modem, (rigth now i have the SB4220) and i'm gonna go try and see if that makes a difference.
and sava, the thing is, b4 the upgrade i was getting almost close near the speeds of 3000/256, i was like 2900/245, and i just did a speed test and got 1871 and 300. used speakeasys, java test.

I'm having your exact same problem
I have Cox in Phx, b4 the upgrade I got speeds d/l over 3000 all the time, now I have the package that's 4000 d/l and no dice!!!! I get speeds right around, and under 2000. WTF did they do!!!!
I do get the increased u/l speed but so what. My web surfing is much slower
Please let me know if you find a solution.

only problem i have is upspeed where i get around 690...cant go oper 700 and it suppose to be up to 768 or some like that

This may sound a little funny but it may have to do with your modem. I have a friend that was experiencing this problem. He had a Linksys modem, BEFCMU10V2, went out and got the latest and greatest from Linksys, BEFCMU10V3, Dont know if its the GPL code or the DOCSIS level but he is getting all of his Premier service now.
The BEFCMU10V2 was DOCSIS 1.0 and the new one, BEFCMU10V3, is DOCSIS 1.1. Dont know if thats what makes the difference or not, but I know he is enjoying his service now. Sends me screenshots of his speeds all the time now :P

If it's an older modem say 2 years or older then that is more than likely the problem. I would suggest going to the Cox support website and finding out what the supported modems are. Here's the link:

I had talked to a buddy of mine that works for Cox and he said they were not supporting older modems any longer. After the speed upgrade from Cox my speeds are around 4100/508 after a little fine tuneing of my tweaks.

Thanks for the tip earthmofo. I was frustrated with the laskluster performance of my Cox internet connection. I considered a few issues, like congestion, the router, and Cox gave the usual "tech" help that assumes I don't know squat about computers. They did provide a clue that it wasn't a congestion problem even though I was getting dial up speeds on speedtests. I read your suggestion and decided that it would be best to just buy a new modem. Now I won't have to rent the Toshiba modem and ,as it turns out, it fixed my speed problems! I got the exact same one you got at Best Buy. Now I get 9006.6 kbps according to Cnet speedtester. Thanks again.

Ex Cox High Speed Internet Tech here:
All of you guys complaining about slow speed and Cox won't do anything about it. It really depends on how bad you bitch at them, and at the 4meg down / 512 up speeds and above, alot of times you are waiting on the server you are connected to, or their ISP equip.
Yes, it is true, it is a shared connection and the amount of people on the same node as you does have a direct influence on what your speed will be regaurdless what they tell you, their equip is only so fast.
Also, the closer you are to the fiber connection makes a difference to one of the lead HSI installing and troubleshooting techs told me. Look for the telephone pole with a electric meter on it and a green standing box about 4' square next to it, that is the fiber connection usually.
If I were having problems, I would switch back to the 4meg line and tell them you aren't 100% happy with the service and would like a refund for the difference of the last month or so, if you are nice to them (sometimes really hard to do, I know, remember I was one of those jack-asses) they will usually do it, up to $50.00 without supervisor's approval.
