Ok,

What's the best way to go about hosting a web and or ftp server when you don't have a static IP. I heard that http://www.dhs.org was good place to start. Your experience with this would be helpfull.

I have BellSouth ADSL which uses a dynamic IP, and I use DHS to do dynamic hosting. It works great. Updates are completed immediately, and rarely is there every any downtime.

I use something similar, TZO.com. It has been fine since I singed up last year. I used DHS.org initially, but they would occasionally have downtime. Switching over to TZO.com, while it cost me a few bucks, has been more reliable.

exactly how does this service work? Do you have to MANUALLY log into the DNS service and change your info to the correct IP number each time your dynamic IP changes?

Hasn't someone come up with a program that can continually check your IP number to see if it matches and if it doesn't... make changes accordingly?

Thanks for all the replies. I'm trying out http://www.tzo.com and it's working great. The program they give you is so easy to use. Now I just to decide if I want to pay for it or go with one of the free services..but I will have to update my IP manually.

Nothing need be done manually. TZO runs as a service on Windows 2000\NT and constantly pings their server. If the originating address changes they update their records to reflect it and walla, my domain name points to my new address. It takes about 20-30 minutes from the time the IP changes until they get updated, but that its. I run it on my server, tucked away downstairs and it updates automatically in the background. It even works behind my LinkSys broadband router, which I was a little concerned it might not initially.
