need something simple, low resource use, blocks stuff silently so they don't have to do anything, and that is easy to use if they need to open it up.

It shouldnt cause a problem but it does use more than others, on older boxes i've seen the system take a little hit when ZA got into it.

Not doubting that you've had that problem, but I never have, and I've used it on some very old pc's... Does EDO tell you how old some were? ... lol

I really liked Zonealarm a few years back, then they brought McAfee on board...

I have recommended Sygate to a few people that were inexperienced, and they like it...

The older versions, before they bought MaAfee on board, works just as good as the latest versions.

Need an earlier version? Just let me know.

I like Sygate Personal Firewall, I've been using now for over 2 years now...
( has it been that long

)
I have to give a lot of credit for this great “free” Windows firewall.
I like how you can block individual ports and port ranges, protocols and i.p. netblock ranges.
Also how you can right click running programs and terminate them.
I also like the packet log and traffic logs, plus how you can right click on the i.p.'s and do a reverse look up.
I also like the fact that you can have the firewall send a automatic email messages when it detects an attack..
that’s very awesome.
It’s also cool that you can right click on the task bar icon, to enable or disable the firewall…
I have used this firewall with Windows 98 up to Windows 2003 Server, without any problems.. very tight.
My 2 Cents.
Be Happy,
Shinobi

I used to use Zone Alarm until they released version 5. Version 5 is horrible. I was having problems connecting whith a few friends playing Rise of Nations and discovered that ver 5 has some bugs in it.
I installed Sygate and so far it seems to be a descent Firewall.

Because of the posts in this thread I decided to try Sygate, and it was the best thing I could have done.

You don't have to spend too much time setting it up and it tells you everything you need to know about what is going on.
Norton was a real system hog, and I saw so many negatives about Zone Alarm (not on this website) that it scared me off from even trying.
It's Sygate all the way!

If you can get a copy of Kerio 2.15, super low on resources and really locked down well...
Looks like this link still works
