Why do you fold........

by Chris
Let me count my reasons.....
Splash, my better half...Multiple Schlerosis
Christopher, my second son....Congenital Heart Disease
and Leigh, my stepdaughter...Leukemia, def and legally Blind
shown with our grandaughter who would never have been, had medical research not been in place to allow Leigh her life.
And my Dad, who died from Cancer

And there are many more reasons I have but these are the closest to me.

I was doing Seti@Home...I thought it was pretty cool and interesting, then I read and heard about Folding...and I thought wow this is even better than S@H and it actually had/has some uses and stuff..
So I switched from Seti@Home and dropped it in favor of F@H....
I switched a couple more times between
F@H, G@H and back to F@H...for various reasons...

I started DC project with SETI@home. I just used it to test stability of my system. Never got into the whole DC competing concept. Then I read F@H/G@H and asked myself, what's the point of SETI@home? Would the project benefit society. Do I really care if they find aliens?

Medical research seems to make more sense to me. Tried to decide between F@H and G@H but ended up going to G@H because the great team we had on amdmb. Tried DF but never felt I was contributing as much compare to G@H. So switched over to F@H.
My grandfather, who I have vivid faint memory (I was like 4/5), died of lung cancer. I could still remember seeing him after the treatments he went through.
A relative of my family suffered Alzheimer's disease and it was really sad to hear what he had to go through the last few years of his life.
And just many other reasons.

I have children. If we have a chance to give them relief from the dangers that reside in our bodies than I for one am happy to pay a little higher electric bill.

I fold with the hope that it will one day give a greater understanding to these diseases so we can stop them where they start. These illnesses are a foe that we have little to no understanding of and the current treatment of them is almost barbaric. Programs like f@h have the potential to generate the data we need to gain the understanding that could lead to a cure. I fold for the people Chris listed, friends and family as well as countless others who face this reality daily. Most of all I fold to bring hope for an actual cure.

*3x siblings...2x before I was born, 1x after I was born (around 5 yo)...died from Leukemia
*Dad died from inoperable brain tumor in '92
*Uncle (moms brother) died from throat cancer around '94
*Aunt (moms oldest sister) currently watching her stuggle on her last few months...started as cancer in the pancreas
*Uncle (dads brother in law, famous neurological surgeon)...died from prostate cancer
*Room-mate in college, good friend...best man at my first wedding...died 2 years ago from leukemia related cancer....36 years old, left a wife and 2 young kids.
*Family dog died from a cancerous tumor in the cheek (had her put down)
No question I'll be folding, regardless of 'lectric bill, summer heat, or single/teams.

Grandfather on my dad's side died from Leukemia about 10 years ago, and my Grandmother on my mom's side died from cancer about 30 years ago. If there's a chance with us doing this (folding) to help bring about an end to people dying from cancer, then it's definitely worth the effort.

My Mom died of a heart attack in 94, she was riddled with cancer. My Dad died in 2000, he had Alzheimers.
And John, you are right, it is the right thing to do.
Fold On people!

I guess I don't have personal reasons, like you guys do....

I fold for family and friends, in-laws and out-laws and for anyone who is - who has - or who will (God Forbid) come in contact with any of these horrible diseases!

It's good for our CPUs, it's great for mankind and... it dang near free!

The price of leaving a few machines on to fold doesn't come anywhere near the price of losing a loved one or the co$t of ICU... I for one will keep on folding and fishin' for the cure! Let's go team SG!!!

And you are absolutely correct. Be happy that it hasn't touched you and I hope for you and yours that it doesn't.

But at least you'll know whether it does or does not, that you have helped work towards a cure. That's even more admirable than those of us that have family reasons.:2cool:

Grandfather died from cancer last month, made me want to do anything to help out research into helping humans live longer happier lives. $4 a month in electrical bills is no big deal when you consider the possible outcome, cure for disease.

I fold quite simply for my aging family and for someone special.
I have 5 roomates, they all fold.
Jeremy lost his mother to cancer.
Harper lost his father to cancer.
Mark is losing his father to cancer.
It hurts to think about these things.
