What are your CAPS, as if it's OOL your slow :)

by G|-|oST
this is not OOL, but a residential fiber-optic connection in Vancouver + cablenut extreme settings from the add-on.

but its funny how you always post your 3000 something test results with titles like Woot and the like but you see my results that are around double your speed and immediately you proceed to point out how SLOW it is. and this is BEFORE you even know what kind of connection it is.

Posted: Sat Feb 15, 2003 5:35 pm
by Lobo
Again, what are your CAPS, and yes I know how to make one go :)

Posted: Sat Feb 15, 2003 6:02 pm

I know what kind of connection it is by clicking on profile, but not CAPS, if unlimited, I've seem better, yours is not bad, the only reason I post speedshots is not to bragg but to slow new people I know alittle :)

You know Lobo I am beginning to see why some people out here don't think much of you and your advice. A lot of the stuff you write just does not make any sense. You say that you posted a picture of your speed test to 'slow' (show?) to the new people that you know 'alittle'. So how exactly does that a picture of a speed test show your knowledge? All I can see is you have some trouble spelling. Anyone can do that. I have seen so many of your posts by you now, all with pictures of approximately same speeds (plus or minus a little) and yet every time you claim to make some radical changes that all of a sudden improved things. You can at least be honest and admit that those are for bragging rights only.

To answer your question, my ISP does not list exact caps as such, I just posted that picture to show that you are bragging about something thats not all THAT great of speeds, and clearly all you can do is try to point out how slow it really is.

Anyways its fast, faster than yours, and I guess that by your logic that would mean I know a lot, but that is not my claim. Just speed, just bragging. Just for fun.

Here is another:

If it was OOL, thatd be fast, not slow. OOL is 10/1mbps. Hes getting 6/6.

I'm not going to argue, I just said if it was OOL, I've seen better, no one said he was slow :)

cant anyone just look at that and say GAWD DAMN!!!
cuz i did, 6/6 holy **** dude, im moving to vancouver.
its a fiber line but is it shared??
like the apartment building shares it?
holy crap how much do you pay for that speed.
i pay 60 bucks usd for 800k/200k my isp aint stupid they are raising our speed to 1mbit down but leaving our upload at 200k, they know we would go friggin crazy if they raised the upload, i think its unfair i would be happy with staying at the 800 and going to like 400 upload. but that will never happen, and ive spoken with the cable companies person in charge of internet access, nice lady, and they brag about how big of a pipeline at&t has given them. they charge whatever they want cuz there is no compitition here where i live. the service is fine, the caps are rock solid. meaning there is never a change i always get 100kb down and about 23kb up.

and for me i base my "thats fast" or "thats slow" statements off what the speed is compared to what the person pays, and for me, im getting screwed, everyone here is, but what can we do? nothing there is no other affordable high bandwidth Co. here. Qwest has said for almost 5 years now that they would be bringing DSL to our homes but i truly dont believe them anymore.
we have a few other dsl companies here but they was like 75 usd for 256k and that is bigger bullpoop than what i pay.

and steele, you do have a tendancy to come off as a "know it all" which yeah you got some knowledge but your knowledge will also tell you that for about 90% of the broadband users these tweaks dont do anything. those people are already at their cap. the other 10% is a bag of mixed results.

No it is not a shared connection for the building. Each data jack in an appartment has its own IP and is an individual connection to the ISP. The service is only available in downtown Vancouver. It costs $29.95 per month (canadian dollars) so anly around $20 US or so. Yeah its a hell of a deal. The only shortcoming is a limit of around 10 Gigs per month of total transfers. But hey I can live with that.

P.S. by the way it wasn't 'steele' who was involved in this discussion, it was Lobo. You don't want to mix up the two, I don't think they like each other.

oh and dont know what im talking about??
so then you are telling me that people who already get the speed that they are supposed to, will get more speed if they do these tweaks ?? i dont think so. nope, not possible with DOSIS, DOCSIS wont allow it, and all speeds are controlled from the base ISP. you know that as well as i do. no registry tweak is going to give someone more than what their caps will allow.

This is taken from mnosteele's help and tips thread dated a year ago-
"IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND
Remember your goal is to get about 90% of your rated speed, sometimes depending on factors beyond your control i.e. routers, servers, line quality etc. it just isn't gonna happen, no matter what you do."

Cablenut is an editor. It is an aid that requires correct imput. Dont like the included custom settings files? Make up your own.

Tweaks help maybe fix a slow down issue, or an erratic download due to a high RWIN. They rarely help anything else. The cap is in the modem, via modem config downloaded from the TFTP.

I have no idea what my caps are. I checked my speed once to see what it was - but my reading and thinking speed is sooo much slower than the internet, I am happy as a clam - and I don't need to brag to anyone.

exactly lunatic and once you've hit your cap that your config file is set to, your not gunna go any faster. PERIOD! NO WAY AROUND IT!! well there is but we dont discuss that here ;)

and yeah i agree that some tweaks can help smooth things out. but also there are too many internet variables that just arent going to be effected by any tweak, but there are also variables that a few tweaks will help, that much i do agree on.

but if your already getting 90% or more of your cap, be happy, tweaking it can sometimes make it worse.
and for gods sake always make a back up of your registry. or at least your registryvalues that are going to be altered.

sending the cfg file back to modem

hahahaha you fool you can bet your account is gunna be deleted now

what your doing is called uncapping, you have rogers cable.. so your in the USA.. its a federal offense, and you are gunna get your internet cancelled, can be faced with fines, and also enprisonment

just so you know, if you succeed, in about 10 seconds afterwards, well your isp knows exactly what your doing, so be prepared to be recieving a phone call.

No, he was calling him a fool and giving out inaccurate information. Name calling is not an opinion.

UOD for your information that chap was uncapping his moddem, he was asking what he needs to do with his config file once he snags it from his modem, its against the forum rules, and is a federal offense here in the USA, and it is gunna cost him his internet if he succeeds.

so, my statement was one of astonishment, and disbelief that he would post such a thing here, and an outright warning in plain 'ol english to stop doing what he was doing or face the consequences.

if you or anyone else want to talk uncapping, there are other places on the internet for that.

This forum does not tolerate discussions of methods to uncap modems.

FYI.....I never referenced you in my reply. What makes you think that I was....simply because my reply is after yours?

Common sense and logic should tell you that my reply was in reference to the bickering, argumentative, and unruly posts made by some members of this thread.

Why the need for the ad hominem is beyond me.

FYI...I'm also in agreement with you!!!! Un-capping is not to be discussed here....hence my reply.

When the members of this forum can work collectively as a team without resorting to personal attacks AND when members can learn to read the rules of SG and what constitutes appropriate subject matter will be the day that I return to work with you all once again.

Until that time.....I will continue to help in the other forums where help is appreciated and personal attacks are kept to a minimum. ;)
