Ramdisk

I`ve been following a lot of the threads about ramdisk. I must say that it works for me so far. But I also see a possible problem..people are saying that startup times are increasing due to the fact that w2k need to execute startup scripts. So far as I can see the only thing that w2k does is execute a X.cmd file.
So why not execute the file from the "Start" menu????

Why stop @ putting 2 tcp/ip files on the ramdisk for improved performance??
I decided to put the IPNAT.SYS on my ramdisk and hey presto I was surfing a lot quicker. This is pretty logical when you think about it because what happens is that when you type a address in it has to be translated to a number so that tcp/ip can find the address. This is what IPNAT does so having this converter if you will in memory makes the whole process quicker.
Don`t forget to tweak the register as well to read
\??\Z:\ipnat.sys
Have fun surfing...

I have had the ramdrive for months now with my TCP/IP files on it. I am talking about the IPNAT.SYS file. I cannot find it in Win98 anywhere.

I`m sorry Dannjr but I certainly do not think that the information is by any means complete @
http://dslnuts.com/ramdrive.shtml
It`s OK as far as it goes and it`s a very good begining for all of us. However once the tweak is in place and running I feel sure that it will inspire a lot of thought develpment in a lot of people possibly resulting in a far improved tweak. Is`nt that what it`s all about on this forum???
Keep up the good work and above all................... enjoy.

Actually the information put there is as complete as it needs to be.
The rest is up to your imagination.. The object of the tweak is to reduce memory use as a whole along with some latency, It did that.
By all means if you want to addon to the ramdisk you have the basis of the setup now. That gives you the chance to even put temp files in there, or a program go for it. just be careful with that, temp files can fragment causing the ramdisk to fill up causing the drivers to off load if the drive isnt big enough. Of course then your back to using more memory again.
What its all about is to develope it better..
Negitives can cause complacency...
But I did notice other people asking again where the complete info for it was. I makes it easier when they have 28 pages in a forum broken down into a simple page or two.
when i get some time I will be updating that.. But like anything there still isnt 48hours in a day
Thanks for the reminder

While reading through the tremendous amounts of posts; I found your Idea both simple and effective. For a long time I was using ramdisk to speed up my everyday browsing by reducing the time my hard drive searched for cached pages. Just by doing that it made my surfing more responsive.
After fighting with Ram drive to actually function like a cache, (creating image files) I decided to search for a better product that is newer! I found one with some very interesting options.
1. It can create up to 1gb!!! <--If I had that much ram...ooooh
2. It can automatically create image files at shut down or timed intervals
3. Allows you to assign drive letters
4. Uses the 32bit format
I found only a few entries to the registry had to be adjusted in order for this to work. Basically point the registry to your new drive for both cookies and cacheing. Another thing I found that worked fairly well is copying my existing cache to my Ramdrive after the program is initialy started. Once and only once its needed and with periodic image writes never misses a beat.
The cost is kinda steep for software like this I think, but Im sure most people know how to get around that issue.
Also, if you go to thier web-site right now you cant even download a shareware version...but that didnt stop me from finding an old mirror with the softare still up
Anyways heres the link for the software if anyone is interested.

Hey guys, you probly think im new here, but im actually a lurker... anyways.. I have this setup workin on my xp box.
To get it to work you follow all the same steps setting up the registry, and I set up my ramdrive to 1 meg using to microsoft software.
Here is what my .bat in startup has on it (keep in mind yours may not need all this b/c i need dhcp and im running zonealarm).
@echo on
Echo Starting TCP/IP Services
copy c:\windows\System32\DRIVERS\netbt.sys z:\
copy c:\windows\System32\DRIVERS\tcpip.sys z:\
copy c:\windows\System32\DRIVERS\afd.sys z:\
copy c:\windows\System32\DRIVERS\ipnat.sys z:\
net start afd
net start tcpip
net start netbt
net start dhcp
ipconfig
@pause
Path=C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\
zonealarm.exe
See how i had to use C: windows in the path? I think thats the key to getting it to work (at least on my box) you can double check by going to start>find and look to see where YOUR files are.
Anyways... this works (and its FAST), the only prob is that norton wont do email protection for me anymore... does all the other virus scan things tho. I think my 333mhz DDR ram might play a lil factor in how quick it is tho...... if you are stuck running 100mhz or below SDRAM you might not notice an appreciable difference.
Edit: This is on winxp home, i dont know if thats any difference tho.

Norton will still scan your email, the pause you set for Zone Alarm is causing Norton to not initialize your email protection. Try enabling the email protection after everything boots.

I'm new to the ramdisk thing so I'm trying to get all the info on this to make it work. I've read most of the posts on here but seeing that things have progressed since the first post software has come out to take a lot of the work out of it, which is great.
My problem is that after using some software (AR) to install a ramdisk I'm lost as to what step I should pick up on with respect to placing other things in this virtual drive (Z) such as TCP/IP.
Like kblarg, I'm using XP Home. I'd like to know how big I should set my Z drive. I have 512 megs of ram and I currently have it set to 20 megs with only my temporary internet files using it. The improvement in surfing is noticable and I'd like to use it for other purposes.
Thanks ahead of time for any help.

Temp files in the Ramdisk only works if you've visited the page before.

It doesn't boost browsing speed.

II undertsand how this works, and it's really ingenius! But how about other drivers ? Would this work for any driver? I know that system drivers are already in memory at boot but what about services (in W2k)? (you'd need a bigger ramdisk but in theory what services could this work for ?)

Here's a ramdisk for XP:
http://www.cenatek.com/product_ramdisk.cfm
E-mail from Cenatek:
"Curt,
Our products are best suited for specific applications that have disk I/O bottlenecks.
If your application (Windows debug) is disk I/O intensive then we have a fit. It sounds more like your system has reliability issues.
Here are a list of programs that benefit from RAMDisk and/or Rocket Drive:
Photoshop (scratch space)
Linux file system (journal files)
Citrix (swap space)
VMWare (OS instance)
SQL Server (Temp DB files)
Why is our product better than SuperSpeed? Well, the functionality is virtually the same, as far as I can tell. One major difference is that if you buy our software you can use it on any hardware (AMD, Intel, single or multiple CPU). They will sell you a different version based on your hardware. I would personally not buy software that was tied to what processor I use, because I frequently switch.

copy c:\windows\System32\DRIVERS\tcpip.sys z:\
copy c:\windows\System32\DRIVERS\afd.sys z:\
copy c:\windows\System32\DRIVERS\ipnat.sys z:\
net start afd

so i got ramdisk xp edited the reg and ramdisk starts not using the bat file though since the drivers are on the disk at startup.
But when i used to use the bat file, the services start before the bat file is fully executed
My point is i don't know where the services are being run from is there any way to check? also if this is the case is there any way to make sure that the services start from the g drive ( i had to put everything there as ramdisk xp uses that as default but changed the registry accordingly)
I doubt that it is being run from ramdisk since my boot time is pretty quick
A better RAMDisk ???

mmmm .... This is not an honest reason to tell people the product is better.
In the same way, one may announce that
http://www.ramdisk.tk
has the BEST ramdisk because it has ...
see above .... but it is cheaper and btw. VERY stable !

Looks like a lot of work. How much of an increase are we talking here ? Is it really worth the time to set it up ? I wasnt impressed with the longer start up times. Windows is slow enough now to start, why slow it down even more ?
