Wow...I have a video card fan.
Yeah so I just fgured that out today.
My comp has been making "noises" for two days now. First I thought it was a HD on its way to a better life. Open up the case and it seems to be coming from the mobo area of the board.
Noises seem to be coming from a moving part so I figure it is the case fan. Nope, it ain't the case fan. Look at the video card (TNT2 32 MB) and say no way, couldn't be.
Took the video card out today and sure enough it is the culprit. The fan is very simple (around 42 mm) and it gets screwed into the heatsink.
So yeah any ideas as to what could be causing my fan to make these noises? It is especially bad at start-up (high speeds?).
Thanks a bunch

or there could be dust clogged in the fan..happens sometimes. using an can of compressed air wont hurt either.
Pentium 4 2.8GHz, 512DDR Kingmax RAM, Intel D845PEBT2 Motherboard, Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer, 3Com 3C905CX-TXNM NIC, Radeon 8500 64MB DDR, Lite-On DVD-ROM, Plextor Plexwriter 40/12/40A CDRW, Antec 430W TruePower PSU, Two Western Digital 100GB 8MB Cache HD's.
Re: Wow...I have a video card fan.
most of the vid cards have fans nowadays...
Take the fan off. Behind the fan there's a little sticker you can peel off slowly. Dont screw it up so you'll be able to stick it back on. Once you peel the sticker off you'll see the little bearing. Just add a drop and that's it. Put the sticker back on, move the fan blade around to work the oil in and slap that puppy back on the card. Install the card back and bingo , you're in business.

Try that idea first. A friend's case started making noises, and while I originally thought it was the fan on the CPU, it turned out to be on his TNT2 HSF. A good few shots of compressed air to clear out all of the dust (there was quite a bit) pretty much solved the problem.

Hey guys thanks for all the replys, sorry i couldnt get back to this thread.. you know school and all of that sutff.
BJM, Docsta- I have tried like blowing + wiping the dust out (don't have any air on hand) but that didnt seem to work. This Friday I tihnk i can scrap a can of compressed air together and then I will try it.
If that doesn't work...
I will try LT and snake's advice with the oil.
lol Bala my video card is not very much "today." El Bob has a TNT2 w/o a fan so I figured mine wouldnt have one either.
Thanks again for all the replys guys!

Update
Turned out all it needed was some oil.
Unfortunetly I used olive oil instead of looking around for some motor oil...hopefully it wont come back to hurt me.

Well, you can look at it this way, if it starts smelling like you are cooking a spaghetti sauce, then you know you box is running hot...

This sounds like a problem...especially if you are handing that comp down to your brother. He won't know whats going on when he starts to smell something burning in the computer case.Originally posted by downhill

Keep an eye on it. After a while, vegetable oils get sticky.
On a side note, the product of iranianhobo's inspiration to me -> https://www.speedguide.net/forums/ ... adid=94329
