More internet connection times out
I've been having a wierd connection problem. I have highspeed access from Rogers cable which has been pretty good, for the most part. I've been haing a problem lately which is driving me around the deepend. Irregardless of how much or what we use, my internet connection seems to stop or time out. It doesn't matter if I use IE, Windows Media Player Kazaa or whatever, they all cannot access the net. A reboot clears things up and everything works great after that until..... Some times it goes for a day or two without losing connection, but sometimes it is only an hour. What is really wierd is that I can ping -t http://www.msn.ca, and I get a response back, but using IE just gets me "page not available. The tech support at Rogers says that this is a problem on my computer, but they weren't more detailed than that. I'm perfectly willing to consider that my pc is the probelm, but I would like more to go on. I have replaced my NIC card and reinstalled windows networking, but still nothing has changed. If anyone out there has any idea of where I could look, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
Thanks.
NIC = Network Interface Card.
Well it's not your IP lease timing out.
Invest (or just download the trial of) Ping Plotter;
http://www.pingplotter.com/
The next time your connection seems to die, run a 2 second interval trace to 63.217.30.70 (that's speedguide's HTTP) then to your primary DNS servers IP address.
See if any router is no responding along the way.
Also... Are you using the downloaded Kazaa or the one with the dummy library file without the spyware?
If so, I HIGHLY recommend checking out the "dummy .dll trick" or use KazaaLite, http://www.kazaalite.nl instead. After that, download and install Lavasoft's Adware, http://www.lavasoftusa.com/downloads.html to remove the spyware.
After that, you're probably running MSIE like the majority of the users and install IE-Spyad to ban tracking cookies. http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm#IESPYAD

I'm currently experiencing the same problem, this thread:

If that helps.... I still have no idea what the problem is

I'll have to try the Ping Plotter suggestion, thanks.
I am using the downloaded version of Kazaa. I am also using Adaware, it's a great app.
I think that this something more basic (i.e. a windows thing or a Rogers thing) because the problems aren't limited to Kazaa or IE. Every application that access's the internet in some way is affected.
Thanks for al the suggestion's. Once I track this down, I'll be sure to post the solution.

I to had this problem. Its your winsock(wsock32.dll) or should I say TCP/IP stack getting corrupted.
Its like you cant open anymore sockets. You get server not found or DNS errors.
I think my problem was caused by ZoneAlarm Pro .... I have formated and reinstalled still had the problem. I reinstalled again and have not reinstalled ZA and the problem seems to have gone away. Also once this problem has happened uninstalling ZA would not fix it.
I'm not certain it was ZA but I have read alot about it causing problems and that other had to format to fix there problem.
I went for months putting up with this.
I made sure I was not out of sockets, that my winsock was not corrupt and my poor ISP has paid hell over this. I actually feel sorry for them... I really went off on them and had long hours of discussing on the phone about this and them checking there server. (I use Bellsouth.net)
If anyone knows about this or if it was really ZA causing this please respond.
There is nothing worse than being connected to Internet and being able to Ping and be Pinged yet nothing works..... server not found or DNS errors.
I just formated yesterday and I think not installing ZA has took care of it.
One Tech said ZA accesses the TCP/IP stack and that over time it can corrupt it or something.
Hope this helps .
SPECIAL NOTE
The problem is still there ...... that means ZA was not causing it
I think my sockets are not being released/refreshed? And I'm running outa sockets.

Hmm... what Operating System (Windows what, hehe)?
I vagually remember reading something about the TCP/IP stack being f'd up.
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
As soon as you reinstall, this should be the VERY FIRST thing you should do right after installing all the essential drivers, ect.

I was running Win98SE with all the upddates, and I tried everything. I had uptimes of almost 2weeks but it seemed these past months that I was just pushing it to hard I guess and Win98SE could not handle it... I would get this thing where I was connected to the internet but could not surf webpages by www or IP. Nothing worked, everything said cant find server or DNS error. Could pull up a DOS box and ping by IP but could not ping by www, I also could be pinged. I think my TCP/IP stack was messing up (but it was replaced from DOS with a fresh wsock32.dll) so I doubt it. It seems to me I was running outa sockets or ports? And something to do with DNS entrys and how my PC handled them was messing up.
I installed WinXP Pro and so far the problem seems gone.
I'm really happy with WinXP now! ATI did good with there drivers and it shows! I have the AIW Radeon and do videocapture, when I last tried WinXP it lasted 2weeks before I went back to Win98SE. Well Win98SE is retired now and I'm happy with WinXP thanks to more mature stable drivers from ATI.
I will say this problem I had with the DNS errors/server not found has my ISP stumped and I'm talking almost 2hrs on the phone checking stuff and then just me and there head tech guy talking and discussing it.
Bellsouth has some good tech if you get the right people and push it. You have to get the call transfered from the people that are just hired to answer the phone though

If you can ping an ip addr outside your network, but can't ping url & you can ping your nameservers' ip addrs, odds are that there is some program on your computer (firewall, spyware proxy) that is killing your connection. If you have any doubts about your ISPs DNS servers being down, enable DNS and put in valid search domains & ip addrs. for nameservers. If you are "cured", you can call ISP about possible network problem.:2cool:

Good suggestion, Robot, but most large ISPs are doing DNS redirect to force you through their DNS no matter what you set your tcp adapter to use

That's true enough. In the past, and actually still, I've been able to put in DNS info. from multiple ISPs to avoid potential problemas/ bottlenecks, configuring the resolver to use multiple search domains and ip addrs (ala Comcast & Earthlink) and, knock on wood, I haven't had trouble yet; just do the occasional "nslookup" or "dig" to make sure everything's still the same so I don't get caught with my shorts down....

To respond to Bertwikks original complaint: try going into msconfig & unchecking KaZaa in the list of startups and reboot. While people are connected to your computer (which they can be at any time as long as KaZaa is running) pulling files off of it, the performance of ALL your internet apps. will suffer..........(and your ping times will be terrible). Not a sermon, just a thought....

Hey Robot,
Thanks for the thoughts about Kazaa, but that's not the case. Since my connection has been so intermitant, I haven't had many uploads from my machine at all. Usually, no more than one at a time (actually less than that) Besides, when my connection was reliable, I would have several downloads at a time, along with several uploads as well with no problems. This went on for 2-3 months before I had a problem.
Besides, I never download music I haven't paid for ;-). Anyone interested in the first year of Star Trek Enterprise ?. Only 26 450 MB mpegs.
How do I check if winsock is the problem ?.
Thanks for all of the suggestions to all.

Hey Legal Mind,
I've done a complete reinstall of IE. I have the "Spyware" portion of Kazaa disabled. I've done a release and a renew in winipcfg. Will that give me a new IP ?. I'm not really sure. Why would there be a conflict in the ip addresses are automatically assigned ?. Would the other person have a static IP ?.
As for mnosteele52's question, I'm running Win98 SE that has all the appropriate critical security patches from Microsoft.
Thanks for everyones help. Once I get this licked, I'll post a complete history of this issue.
