Basics on Spyware

Post by Ken »

For people new to security, this is a good read to help you understand the basics of spyware...

It's worth looking at even if you are aware of spyware as it lists registry keys and other info...

Skyman, you definitely need to read this... ;)

Good start Ken :)

Spyware comes in many forms, from the adds in freeware to dll file replacements. It's good to know what's up with the different types and what they can do to your system.

Here's another link for some good reading.

Wow, I never knew they had malicious spyware that would disable you from editing your registry.

The anti-virus companies need to start cracking down on spyware, a lot more!

Good information, guys.

FWIW, my one machine that the kids were using Kazaa on was REALLY grinding to a crawl. I ran Ad-Aware on it, and I was shocked at all the spyware nonsense that it found (and cleaned) there. It's running like a champ now.

I think it's time to start being proactive about it, though.

I agree ... spyware is almost just as important as a virus, or trojan!

:) Hello Everyone!

Spyware and adware are ever growing problems on the Internet. Learn all you can about it. It's up to you.

For my part, to combat them I use Spybot Search an Destroy, Adaware 6, SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are on duty all the time, but I still do weekly scans with Spybot and Adaware. I find that they complement each other nicely.

BTW, all of these programs are freeware. Adaware has a payware version though. The others don't.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard Link

You can get Spybot S&D here: http://security.kolla.de/

There's a link to Lavasoft in one of the above posts where you can find Adaware.

Best of luck to all of you from Larry :)

:D It's been awhile since I was here last. ;)

Adaware Free is only an on-demand-scanner, meaning you have to open it and run a full system scan. However, it's simple to setup and quick.

SpywareBlaster uses the same technique as SpyBlocker. It sets the kill-bit for ActiveX controls. It is freeware and updated regularly too.

SpywareGuard is a RTM, a Real-Time-Monitor that runs in the background helping to keep your system safe while you surf. It works much the same as an AV RTM but is of course for spyware detection.

These programs are part of my regular stable. I don't leave home without them!

Nowadays Spyware and Adware is a lot more menacing than virii/trojans.
Make sure your O/S is uptodate with all security updates from MS....Use the programs mentioned above and watch what you download.
Switching to Mozilla is a very good option....its faster and better than IE and is a lot less prone to being hijacked.

Folks, howdy haven't been here awhile. I discovered a site that some of you may know and if you do, you will agree that one neeeds to allocate three hours for it. It has info and many, yeah many freeware and commecial security programs.

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/main-nf.htm

sorry about the edit, but you might try K-Meleon as your second browser. I use Mozilla Firefox as my default, K-Meleon, my second, and IE I keep because with SP2 it is more secure now and I need it for Windows Update.. K-Meleon is lightning fast. I use it for adventure surfing. Also I suggest Prevx Home, a free generic intrusion detecter.

Ewido has been good for me including the removal of a spyfalcon variant on a friends machine.

Download at http://www.ewido.net

Its free if you are prepared to update it manually (weekly) just dont install "background guard" when prompted, and this will disable automatic updates and make the program free for use.

Easy to use interface, and works well...Highly recommended for removal of spy/malware.
